About this deal

This product couldn’t come more highly recommended – it does the job and it is very affordable to boot. Don’t worry too much about the midges in Scotland and don’t let them put you off visiting this beautiful country. Midge bites don’t irritate me as much as mosquito or cleg (horse fly) bites and as midges don’t transmit disease to humans, I’m more relaxed about midges. We generally find it’s too windy for midgies most of the time anyway! When you go out and it isn’t that windy, carry a couple of different natural insect repellents and a midge hood and hopefully, you should be fine.

Don’t use products with strong perfumes as these can attract midges (eg. deodorant, shampoo, soap, perfume, shower gel, etc.)Smidge comes in a pump spray and is like a moisturising milk or lotion which you apply to your skin. Another effective way to keep midges away is by using plants that midges dislike such as marigolds and basil. These plants can be placed near areas where midges are commonly found such as doors and windows. Jungle Formula Maximum is the big daddy of insect repellents and it definitely deserves its place at #2 under Smidge.

When it comes to the worst one, the bath oil and lotion are tied. Neither one excels at repelling mosquitoes, with both only repelling two types of mosquitoes: Aedes and Culex. 6While it is not officially mentioned by Avon that this product, infused with natural oils and citronella aroma offers the best midge protection, it comes highly recommended by the Marines and the SAS. Icaridin works similar to DEET, but its adoption is not as widespread. For example, Canada only allowed the use of icaridin in 2012, a long time after the United States and the United Kingdom did. Cover exposed skin– midges have short mouth parts so can’t bite through material although they will crawl under clothes. Hi Wanda! Skin So Soft is available on the web at http://www.avon.com/repstore/wbrown2148. Thanks! Reply

Avon midge repellent: Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil Body Spray with Jojoba Does Avon Skin So Soft still repel midges? However, the time of effectiveness varies from study to study. One study showed that Avon Skin-So-Soft worked for 40 minutes, ranking below DEET products 3 while another showed a 5-hour working time. 4 Though it’s unclear if the 40-minute study used Avon’s Bug Guard repellent brand, despite mentioning it in the paper . Also, the 5-hour study used Avon products that contained icaridin, an ingredient found in some lower-tier repellents, at least in Canada . Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk: Midges are most active at these times, so try to limit your outdoor activities during these periods. A great alternative is to light a few of these candles if you’re intending to sit outside as they’re designed to release a scent that midges, mosquitoes, and other buzzy critters hate. Avon’s Skin So Soft This moisturiser was not created as a midge fighter but for some reason, someone realised it works against the beasties. Many people swear by this pleasant smelling body cream as an anti-midge defender. You can buy it online from Avon and many outdoor stores.Buzz Off Spray Although it says this repellent is for mosquitoes I have found it to be useful against Scottish midge. It has a very pungent repellent smell on your skin but it's good at midge protection. This is DEET based and you should be aware it can ruin some plastics, such as watchstraps, but it does see off a wide range of insects including midges. It works by deterring insects from landing on the skin. Buy from outdoor stores including Tiso. DEET isn’t the only weapon. Products containing the active ingredients Picaridin and IR3535® are as effective.”

Scotland’s infamous midges can bring misery to your holiday, especially if you’re not suitably prepared for them. Totally agree with DDootsie, folklore indeed...If it really worked, and it was proven it really kept biting insects and the like away, they would actively promote this and widely advertise if it was fact. It’s also the cheapest of the bunch, has a manual pump dispenser, and it’s infused with natural oils so it’s virtually free of chemicals. Adult midges in Scotland generally start to come out in April and are active on the wing until October. There are often two peaks in emergence which are the worst months for midges in Scotland so these are the best times to avoid – one in late May/early June and the second in late July/early August. It is dependent on the temperature so could start a bit earlier or end slightly later. By early autumn midge numbers start to decrease, which is why September and October are good times to visit Scotland. So next time you’re jotting down a shopping list, include these items for a midge-free Scotland break. They’ll make you smell nicer too in the process. It’s no big deal to avoid being their next mealWhilst we cannot make the midges disappear, we hope this guide has given you some helpful advice on how to deal with the midges in Scotland. I use the oil version on the bowling green. It is quite effective but like the midges I hate the smell. As for midges the last report said that there were more of the wee devils this year - and that tall men & large women are more likely to be bitten Still, if you want to give midges the elbow this is one of the best products to buy and the fact it doesn’t use DEET or indeed any nasty chemicals is a massive bonus. There are, however, ways to avoid midges which include avoiding the regions where they’re most prevalent ie. the Highlands, the north and west coasts, and the west coast islands, but obviously you will then miss out on seeing the most scenic parts of Scotland.
