The Three Zones of Writing: The FANTASTICs (Ideas), The GRAMMARISTICs (Tools), and The BOOMTASTICs (Techniques) support their learning, precision and writing. At Whitehouse Primary School we are very proud of our pupil’s handwriting and take particular care in our cursive/joined-up handwriting style. We use Letter-join as the basis of our handwriting policy that covers all the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum. The Writing Rainbow poster is a classroom resource that encourages interaction and the collection of ideas during the writing process. The Writing Rainbow offers a complete view of ‘The Write Stuff’ methods and systems. As a catalyst to speedy handwriting we encourage parents and carers to use the Letter-join resources at home and can arrange for free access to the Home Edition of Letter-join.

By using these lenses, pupils will become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing. This approach supports a systems view to teaching writing that can be applied to any text, novel, picture book or film. The Large Writing Rainbow Symbols are a set of brightly coloured, hard wearing resources for use in all aspects of the teaching and learning process. Designed by Jane Considine, this excellent classroom resource is a must have for every teacher. IDEAS - The FANTASTICs uses a child friendly acronym to represent the nine idea lenses through which children can craft their ideas. The Write Stuff provides a balance of narrative, non-fiction and poetry writing throughout each term. Impact Enable section – the children write their sentence following the model and have the opportunity to 'deepen the moment' where they can explore the plot point further and demonstrate their own creative sentences using their previous learning.

During the Model section the teacher prepares children for writing by modelling the ideas, grammar and techniques of writing taken from the writing rainbow. In Reception, children are immersed in a language rich environment, with stories at thecore of their learningand the Early Years Curriculum. Even before theycan write, the childrenare securing their understanding of words and their meanings through 'Picture Power'. The FANTASTICS are used to focus the children's ideas about what can be seen, igniting their senses and broadening their vocabulary. The children are also taught ambitious word choicesthrough 'Word Collecting'activities. Learn the Fantastic Foundations approach through a one day training course with creator, Jane Considine. You will spend the day learning the system amongst like-minded teachers and those within the teaching profession. You will be armed with the tools and techniques needed to implement the system immediately into your classroom. Model section – the teacher close models a sentence that outlines clear writing features and techniques.

This part of the unit is heavily scaffolded with lots of teacher input and modelling of vocabulary use, sentence construction and use of grammar with reference to the 3 writing lenses. During the initiate section children ‘chot’ (chat and jot) down their ideas from stimulating resources, such as pictures, music and drama. The children are encouraged to use ‘kind calling out’ where they call out examples of vocabulary, adverbs, onomatopoeia etc. In the Enable section pupils write their own sentences, taking the opportunity to deepen the moment. ‘Deepen the Moment’ is where children are challenged to independently draw upon previously learnt skills and apply them to their writing during that chunk. Jane Considine will be coming to Northamptonshire on the 7th December 2023 to deliver Fantastic Foundations, in person.
