About this deal

We leave wowed by this ancient, beautiful meeting place of forest and sea, and hope it remains protected until we return.

Look at pictures of the Daintree Rainforest and brainstorm some captions that would be persuasive and encourage people to be environmentally conscious. The pictures are beautiful, and are photographs of reliefs rather than being illustrations. The reliefs show the faint outline of the boy’s imagined dinosaurs, rainforest animals and Aboriginal children who once lived in the forest. They also show the threat of hotels, swimming pools and televisions that hangs over the area. Hopefully it's her idea & not pinched from someone. (I'm always nervous of high profile people who fed on their peers' ideas, energy, and support it's my forever disclaimer. And honestly, if I found out they were the vampire type of people, I'd erase their work from my mind).Ask the students to retell the story as a sequence of events. Then get them to change one element; "how would

Have students create pictures of themselves with the characters from the book in each of the three environments, i.e. a rainforest environment, a coastal environment and their school environment. Students can incorporate drawing, painting or other types of artistic mediums. Students will also create speech bubbles and written dialogue for one or more of the characters and place them in an appropriate spot on the pictures. Beautiful collage illustrations take the reader on an extraordinary visual journey to a primeval wilderness, which like so many others is now threatened. There is a very strong environmental message in the book that if we truly immerse ourselves in nature and experience it with all our senses, we will want to preserve it and keep it this secret magical place that we visit and leave without a trace.

We walk with him among the ancient trees as he pretends it is a time long ago, when animals that are now extinct or rare lived in the forest and aboriginal children played there. But for how much longer will the forest still be there, he wonders? A father takes his son to a place you can only reach by boat and the boy immerses himself in this secluded ancient and magical place where present, past and future overlap. Collages allow us to spot people and animals from a long time ago in the forest. After wondering how long it took the trees to grow this tall, the boy imagines what will happen when this secret place isn’t so secret anymore and buildings start to replace the ancient forest. A great book is always a fantastic place to start when planning an integrated learning experience for your students, after all, books are familiar andengaging. The themes running throughout this text lend itself to many regularly taught topics.

My father says there has been a forest here for over a hundred million years," Jeannie Baker's young protagonist tells us, and we follow him on a visit to this tropical rain forest. The book is about a young Australian boy, who's father takes him to a Rain forest by boat. The young boy explores the rain forest and pretends it is a long time ago when extinct animals lived. As he travels through the rain forest, he finds 'ghostly' images, including a dinosaur, a young aboriginal child and a holiday resort build by the sea. When the young boys exploration comes to an end, he leaves the forest wondering if he would ever return to its preserved condition.
