Notes on reading The author relates stories of her experience, but it's all very one-note, there is no reflection, no depth, but maybe that's to come. So far the only interesting bits are on how nice the Aluthor finds the travelling community although beyond saying that the men are very respectful (to the nurses at least) and their caravans are very clean, I don't know how this is supposed to change the public perception of them. She explained: “On the one hand I had a duty of care to this woman and child. On the other hand, going inside meant taking an unnecessary risk. This was such a powerful, vividly written book. I think that in general, books based on the Holocaust are quite daunting and the amount of research the author has put into writing this books makes it all the more difficult to read although it remained gripping throughout. These two hero's then come together to do what they can to save lives and treat the women in their care with dignity and respect in the unbelievably terrible circumstances.

Great book, well written & good depiction of a day in the life of a midwife in the NHS & how insidious working in such an environment can be to ones health. MS Lane has taken historical facts and turned them into a heart-breaking and heart-felt story of determination, strength and courage as we learn about the midwife, Emilia in Auschwitz who with the help of Aleksy and Lena saved hundreds of lives, make sure you have a box of tissues while reading. I really didn't know much about what being a midwife really means. I had no idea of the pressure and strain midwifes face every day. I totally agree that band 7 & 8s should do some actual shifts on the wards. Especially when they know that agency staff are unable to do some roles. AND especially when their own team are short staffed. This was one of those perfectly written books that I devoured in a day because I just couldn’t help myself from reading on and on. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my daughter hopping from one foot to the other, almost bursting with excitement. I washed my hands one last time and it was only then, finally, that she was allowed to give me a hug. The Secret Midwife: Life, Death and the Truth about Birth is a highly affecting account of one midwife's experiences in her field. Many of us would go on to a be employed in a job that pays the bill — Pippa isn't one of them. It's not even a job for her, it's a vocation, a mission, and I think that's admirable. Interesting insight into the past and present of mid-wifery under the NHS in the U.K. framed around stories of patients and nurses.
