About this deal

Aveline Jones loves to read ghost stories, while others her age like stories with unicorns or horses. Knowing she is different in this way, she is unstoppable in her quest to find spooky tales. When Aveline is sent to stay with her aunt in a small, sea-side village, she finds a book full of ghost stories. Strange happenings begin to occur and Aveline finds herself entangled in a very dangerous showdown with a vengeful ghost. Thank you to Usborn Publishing for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in anyway. I felt an affinity with the main character Aveline, as I to was obsessed with ghosts and all things that go bump in the night. Aveline is forced to spend half term visiting her strict and formal Aunt Lilian in the little coastal town of Malmouth, days of boredom await her and she uses her love of ghost stories to pass the time finding a very old one full of tales, in a second hand bookshop where she meets shy and messy haired Harold and his Great Uncle.

Aveline is forced to stay with her Aunt in the lead-up to Halloween in a small coastal village. While there, Aveline comes across a book of ghost stories that used to belong to a girl who went missing over thirty years before. With spooky happenings, Aveline's life is then put into mortal danger when it appears a vengeful ghost may want her for her own. I live in Oregon at the moment, though I hail from the UK. Growing up in a house overlooking a graveyard, on the edge of the bleak and foreboding Pennine Hills, seems to have instilled in me an obsession with all things dark and spooky. The Vanishing of Aveline Jones is published in October 2022. The Haunting of Aveline Jones is just perfectly spooky and yet so cozy - a bleak little English town by the sea, raging autmn storms, ghostly legends, an old second-hand bookshop, homely cottages, and warm fireplaces. But another thing I liked is how that the adults were present for most of it. There is the show owner of the second hand bookstore and his cousin (of the same age as Aveline). But also surprisingly her aunt who builds a relationship with Aveline throughout everything that is happening. Never did she make Aveline feel silly for feeling as something paranormal was going on around them. She believed her, because she knew that Aveline would never make it up.

From the second we meet Aveline we are met with an interesting child who loves ghosts and all things haunting, then as they drive into her aunts creepy beach side town we see a child like creepy scarecrow, in which starts us off on the mystery we get to unfold whilst reading. Its half term (and halloween) when Aveline arrives in the seaside town of Malmouth to stay with her Aunt. A visit to the local bookshop leads Aveline to discover some haunting local folklore that is tied up with the disapperance of a young girl called Primrose Penberthy. As Aveline begins to investigate the mysterious disapperance of Primrose she is drawn into a dark and haunting tale, and as the stormy weather stirs so does a restless spirit from the depths of the sea....

The Haunting of Aveline Jones is a fast-paced, extremely well-written story, scary enough to send shivers down the spine and perfect for Halloween. Aveline is a feisty, intelligent girl who, although often scared by what is happening around her, is determined to solve the mystery of what happened to Primrose. Helped by an interesting and well-drawn bunch of characters - Harold and Mr Lieberman from the bookshop, Edith Fitzwilliam, an authority on local folklore, and even Aunt Lilian herself - Aveline continues to work on the puzzle. I can imagine this so clearly being adapted into a film/TV series, very much in the the style of The Nightmare Before Christmas or, more likely, Coraline. I mean, the Lady in the Waves is SO the Other Mother! It is only October but Winter has come early and so too has half-term. Aveline had many plans for her extended break but none of them involved residing with her cold and controlling aunt in her colder and bleaker seaside home. Looking to distract herself from the relentlessly dreary weather and her aunt's disproving demeanour she escapes to a second-hand book store to add a new addition of the ghost stories she adores so much, to her collection. The mysterious volume she selects promises to be as nightmare-inducing as she was anticipating, but the history of it might just be even more so!The setting helps a lot too. The way the town is described for example is always just the right amount of creepy and spooky, without being too scary. And I love that even seemingly unimportant details all play their part in elevating the story as a whole, and make sense in the grand scheme of things. I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this book! It is a superb work of ghostly fiction: the air of menace and the feeling of foreboding that runs through it means the reader is on edge from beginning to end. It's unpredictable and impossible to put down. It's very much an atmospheric read with the setting perfectly suiting the story. I enjoyed this read just as much as I did the first time around. I was reminded of how much I liked Ghost Girl and Book Boy, and how perfectly the illustrations complimented the story. I appreciated the connection between the creepy scarecrows and the crossed out story in Aveline’s book more this time around. Aveline goes to a little bookstore and finds a really cool book full of local ghost stories. Unfortunately, the previous owner of said book decided to cross out the words of the final story, making it impossible to read it. Aveline sets out to find Primrose Penberthy, the book’s previous owner, to find out more about this final story. But Primrose went missing over thirty years ago.

Satisfyingly eerie, supernatural children’s book, with a slightly old-fashioned feel - reminding me of similar books by classic authors like Penelope Lively. This is centred on Aveline Jones who’s dreading having to spend half-term with her fussy, forbidding aunt in a remote, Cornish fishing village. But once there Aveline’s love of ghost stories unexpectedly leads her to Primrose, a girl who vanished without a trace years before. Primrose’s disappearance is somehow intertwined with local legends about a vengeful spirit who rises from the sea at Halloween, a spirit who may be pursuing Aveline. This is a simply told but highly effective, atmospheric piece, the characters are a little sketchily drawn but the plot's intriguing enough to make it a compelling read. I particularly enjoyed the depiction of the strangely deserted, eccentric village and the inventive incorporation of a reworking of the La Llorona myth. The story about the lady of the water was more sad at first, though became increasingly NOPE as it continued. This is a great reading option for anyone aged 8+ who loves fast-paced reads and not-too-scary mysteries. The publisher says fans of A Widdershins Adventure books, The Last Wild Trilogy and the Frostheart books will love this series by the author of the Shadowhall Academy books too. Aveline Jones is a big fan of ghost stories and just can’t get enough of them. When she is sent to stay with her Aunt Lillian in a dreary, creepy town called Malmouth over half term, she thinks things are going to be boring, that is until she discovers a creepy old book. The stories within the book are terror-inducing to say the least and Aveline soon finds out the book used to belong to Primrose Penberthy, who disappeared never to be seen again. Aveline then finds herself investigating Primrose’s disappearance unaware that something or someone is stirring and looking for her.

It is important to note that the majority of the themes explored in this book deal with sensitive subject matters. My review, therefore, touches on these topics as well. Many people might find the subject matters of the book as well as those detailed in my review overwhelming. I would suggest you steer clear of both if this is the case. Please note that from this point forward I will be writing about matters which contain reflections on child endangerment, forceful disappearance of a minor, crime involving a minor, death of a child, & others. Aveline has to spend her holidays with her uptight aunt who lives in Malmouth, a desolate coastal town, where life seizes up once the summer tourists leave - a dull and dreary vacation seems inevitable. But then Aveline stumbles across an old book about local ghosts and legends, and learns that in Malmouth, not everything might be well... I read this story in one day and loved it entirely. Feeling spooked, haunted and proud of Aveline all the way through to the end! Whether you read it on a sunny bright day or a rainy grey day, I am sure you will enjoy it! Despite her fondness for ghost stories, she finds the town a little creepy, particularly when sinister scarecrows appear outside people’s homes in the lead up to Halloween. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Aveline, and I am delighted to see that another adventure is planned for her in the future. I shall be waiting eagerly to find out what happens to her next! Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I just loved Aveline, she is a bookworm like me and can get totally lost in books. Not only that, but she also loves ghost stories, which I have been doing since I was small. I just love bookworms in stories. I can often relate to them. Next to the bookworm stuff, Aveline was also a wonderful and brave character. She went on to search for Primrose despite the scary things happening to her and in the end even tried to do something (which was a bit stupid but mostly brave) for Primrose.
