His children complain that he is not showbiz enough, and should be getting them more invites to cool parties. Yet for all his humility, Jones is still an actor’s actor. It’s in his blood. And as such, the last thing you’ll get him to admit to is a particular character type that he’s most suited to playing (“The whole joy of my job is the sheer variety”), or any awareness of how the world sees him. He says he doesn’t even watch his own past work if he can help it. There is, however, one common thread in several recent roles that Jones recognises in himself: “I am quite meticulous as a person. I often find myself preoccupied with detail.” Unfortunately, there will be one gaping hole in the returning cast left by there being no Dame Diana Rigg, who played Veronica, Andy’s mother-in-law, as she passed away in September of this year.

Everyone has huge potential, and rooms that they may not even know in their personalities, to go into.” One thing led to another and Ladwa found himself soon auditioning for professional work, eventually landing a role in Strictly Dandia by the Tamasha Theatre Company and productions at the King's theatre in Edinburgh and at the Lyric in London. Crook and co-star Toby Jones are at the centre of most of the storylines as friends Andy and Lance, and are completely relatable in their roles, with their weaknesses fully on display for all to see and care about, but, as so often with the very best comedy series, the cast of supporting characters is just as important. And in the case of Detectorists, there’s a whole host of outstanding acting talent that fleshes out the show, including Piers Quigley as the remarkably cynical and sarcastic Russell, Gerard Horan as Terry, president of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club, and Sophie Thompson as his wife Sheila, who seems to steal every scene she appears in. Not to mention the butts of many a joke, ‘Simon and Garfunkel’, played with naïve aloofness by Simon Farnaby and Paul Casar, who allow some of the sillier and more wonderfully childish moments of humour to flourish.
