I first heard of this book from a wonderful friend of mine, whom I met on Bookstagram but can now say is a true friend after meeting her in real life. I can’t deny that the first thing which attracted me to this book was the cover, I mean seriously, look at it. It is a work of art in its own right. But, after reading the blurb and discovering it was set in Italy, I was further drawn to it. Color. It's all color," says Zorzo. "That's where it begins and ends. Venetians understand. Color is mood, love, sorrow, life. Color is what the world is built of." The book does do a good job of the art aspects of the book. Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not that knowledgeable about art. However, getting to read about the craft and learning more about how it was done during the Renaissance was very interesting to me. I could also tell that the author had done his research and is very interested in the topic of art. The quest for certain colours and artists trying to get the job was interesting. I will say, though, that I do feel like this part of the book could have been cut down a little bit. While I did enjoy these elements, it made the overall plot suffer. Now, had this book just solely focused on art, I think it would have worked.

DD: At first, it was enticing to create the mystery of an unseen colour as an identity in the story. Then I realise the majesty of the unseen colour’s identity, hence naming it ‘prince royal’. Competitive painters. A new, undiscovered colour that would propel a career. A mysterious, beyond-wealthy couple—a businessman who’s the richest man in Europe, and his kept wife who’s the most beautiful woman a person could set eyes on. With the bubonic plague a looming threat, these elements explode together like paint on a canvas.

But it is Sybille whose eye he catches. And when their relationship drags Zorzo into a conspiracy spanning the entire continent, it is far more than his career in danger . . . This book is set during the troubling times of the plague, so not only are we given an insight into renaissance Italy but also at the effect this disastrous illness caused and the path of chaos it left in its wake. When Elliott conducted the exercise the next year, she added something extra to collect data. She gave all of the students simple spelling and math tests two weeks before the exercise, on the days of the exercise, and after the exercise. I’ve read a lot of historical fiction but none set in Venice. For that reason I wanted to read this book. For me it starts slow . There were some interesting parts and I wasn’t quite expecting the ending. The Colour Storm is set during the Italian renaissance, a time of art and creativity but also violence and treason. The main protagonist, Giorgione Barbarelli, or Zorzo to his friends is an artist trying to make a living doing what he does best, painting. But competition is rife which means his life and livelihood is often hanging on by a thread. He even resorts to pawning his relative’s ring to make ends meet.

Set in the sixteenth century when many amazing artists were achieving renown this historical based on real life figures delves into the world of Renaissance art. The descriptions of the often stark world of the artist and those who apprenticed in the artist’s studio, the intrigue both political and personal surrounding the wealthy patrons and the artists in their sphere, and of course the personal relationships and characters who peopled The Color Storm particularly Zorzo. Zorzo is an interesting character, I like how passionate he is for his art and how far he is willing to go to reach his goals. However, we are shown his weaknesses which often betray him and gets him into trouble at times. He is a complex character, brought to life with monologues which at time feel almost Shakespearean in their manner and tone. The Allies are now on the offensive on all three fronts. As their forces push through Europe soldiers start uncovering Hitler's death camps. This was the Allies' first concrete knowledge of the Holocaust. This is a compelling and spellbinding story set in Renaissance Venice and centered around a great painter who is searching for a new colour to make his mark upon history.
