About this deal

You want two different things at the same time: you are so curious to find out how the mystery unfolds and you don’t want the book end. The morning August arrives on the ferry, Emery knows something has changed on the island even before she lays eyes on him. The trees on the island have changed color overnight and the birds are acting strange. A storm is coming. Emery has lived a half-life since August left the island—and her. They’d had plans to leave together, but for the last fourteen years she’s been doing exactly what she’d said she wouldn’t: living on the island running her mother’s tea shop. Many thanks to Random House Publishing Group Ballantine and NetGalley for providing me with this digital advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own, honest thoughts about this book.

I loved everything about this novel. The characters, the world building and the plot. The characters are many and each of them added depth and breadth to the narrative. The story is told from multiple points of view. As such the chapters are titled after each character’s view. These multiple points of view was just one of the things that I enjoyed about this novel. It really gave insight as to the mindset of the characters and the goings on in Saoirse. A rural island community steeped in the mystical superstitions of its founders and haunted by an unsolved murder is upended by the return of the suspected killer in this deeply atmospheric novel. There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told. I knew, because I was one of them.” Adrienne Young, Spells for Forgetting If you’ve read any of Adrienne Young’s YA novels, you’ll be familiar with her effortlessly atmospheric and lyrical writing. Spells for Forgetting feels even more affecting and immersive, blending magic and slow burn romance with the kind of evocative descriptions that brings Saoirse to life in all its beauty and ugliness. It really is the epitome of an autumn novel – one to be read curled up under a blanket as the trees rustle outside. And if the trees aren’t rustling, you’ll be able to hear them anyway thanks to Adrienne Young’s enchanting ability to transport readers into the wind and sea swept island of her story. What a wonderful and haunting story this was for me. Adrienne Young is a writer who certainly knows how to make simple words expressive and heartfelt without being too flowery and overdone. The atmospheric writing was beautiful and whimsical where the reader can envision the simple life and everyday functions on Saiorse. I found the characters very believable and felt all their emotions within each of their stories. I enjoyed that the book had several dark mysteries at it's core which will all be brought to light by the end of the book. Do not go into this book thinking there is a lot if magic and fantasy happening throughout the story or you might be a little disappointed. The mysticism is subtle and felt realistic which made the book so very entertaining. I'm so glad I was given the chance to read this novel as it was a wish book granted to me by the publisher.Writing is dreamy, descriptive, beautiful and atmospheric but slow-paced. It is written in first person narrative from mostly Emery’s POV, there is irregular August’s perspective and a couple from other characters. There are intermittent past chapters that showed August and Emery’s life before fire, their friendship with Dutch and Lily, and their plans for life. It gives another angle on how fire and death changed their life. It also gives hint that not everything seems as it is shown. Forgetful spells, such as a spell to forget someone or forget me spell belong to a class of spells that are commonly referred to as life spells. These are forgetful spells that help us to forget the things in our lives that cause us pain and suffering. Forgetful Spells From the New York Times bestselling author comes an evocative, compelling novel of ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love. I want to thank the publisher "Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine" for the wonderful opportunity to read this novel and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

Spells for Forgetting – Adrienne Young

Overall, Spells for Forgetting is interesting, dark, atmospheric, and mysterious thriller with touch of magical realism but it didn’t turn out as good as I expected. It sure needed spell for speed and magic. This is a powerful affirmationthat, when coupled with the right ritual acts, can help you manifest a real change in your life starting from your inside. A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love Though her mouth wasn’t visible behind the scarf, I could see the frown in her eyes and the look edged too close to suspicion. I’d been given that look many times before.A book begging to be read on the beach, with the sun warming the sand and salt in the air: pure escapism. The plot is complex and encompasses a whodunnit mystery with numerous twists. But it’s not just a mystery/thriller, Spells also has some elements of fantasy — spells and potions, and a bit of romance. There is a big and long reveal, but it is slowly exposed layer by layer through each of the players in the novel. A reveal that is sure to surprise. An island full of secrets and mysteries. A murder years ago that still haunts the town with a love that could be deadly to all involved. Full of superstition, folklore, romance and secrets, this book is not to be missed.
