About this deal

Snow Leopardess is the fifth line of a generation curated by Marietta Fox-Pitt, herself the 80-year-old matriarch of the celebrated equestrian family. Son William is a three-time Olympic medallist and six-time Burghley Horse Trials victor and is married to ITV Racing presenter Alice Plunkett. I liked it because it is taken place on a farm and the characters are interesting but also I loved the foal best of all. I would recommend it to everyone but specifically for those who love animals. The bond between Addie and the foal I think was a beautiful one, and one that really resonated with me, as being an animal lover myself who has formed close bonds with them myself, I think the bond between a human and an animal is one of the most beautiful, significant bonds there is, yet also underrated of course. Snow Foal shines out with compassion and understanding for the children at its heart. Susanna's writing is delicate and beautifully understated (Julia Green) - And as adventure and unexpected friendship blossom, Addie is determined that both of them will know what is to be home again soon . . .

Snow Foal | Summer Reading Challenge

Addie reminds of one of our boys name Pete. Very heartbreaking. I'd forgotten him until I read this book. Very good book. I just didn't like the ending " Snow to build Things with " What? Why not what happened to the foal? What happened to her and her friends? Overall this was a great book though. The setting is described well, but then all the characters are shoved in there without any real personalities. And the poor pony never even got a name. Addie looked over her shoulder. Penny was taking papers from her bag: papers about Addie. Papers for deciding things.Strengths: Like Scarlet Ibis, Snow Foal gives us a good look at the foster care system in England, along with an enticing view of an English farm. Addie's feelings and concerns see true to life, and her transference of her feelings of longing for her mother to the foal are very realistic. It's good to see other points of view; Gabe was adopted by Sam and Ruth, so is more stable, Sunni still wants to see her mother but knows that it is increasingly unlikely, and Jude is too young to fully process his circumstances. Penny is portrayed more sympathetically than many social workers, which I appreciated. The real draw will be the wild foal, and Addie's ability to bond with it and take care of it. There's even a bit of adventure when Addie takes off into the night. Although this is a middle-grade novel, I believe that it is something that YA readers and adults will love too, just like I did. As darkness fell, and the moon spilled silver light across the moorland, instinct pulled the foal towards the protection of the hedgerow. He pushed his soft muzzle beneath frozen branches, twisted his tongue around the bitter, brittle leaves that nestled beneath. He shook snow from his nostrils and stretched forward, searching for more food. It’s another Bookwagon day in our house. The kids were so excited to get their latest books in the post. Snow Leopardess’s great-uncle, Le Djinn, won two Flat races, two hurdles, the Grand Prix de Bordeaux at Auteuil and the Melton Hunt Race. He also did Bramham three-day event with both Marietta and William. Dallas and Florida are the oldest children in the Boxton Creek Home. Disillusioned, they have low expectations of their latest placing - but Tiller and Sairy Morey are an unusual couple. Then he was sliding, falling: thin legs flailing amidst a tangle of sharp twigs. Snow slid with him, pressing him into the ditch behind the hedge. Ruth smiled still more broadly. ‘Good,’ she said. ‘Won’t be a mo.’ She moved a shiny copper pan from the bench on to the stove and began to stir it. At home there was a streetlamp outside Addie’s bedroom window. It shone through her curtains like a small yellow sun. It kept her company when she couldn’t sleep. At home, it was never quiet. Even at night. There was always the hum of traffic, the slamming of doors, the call of cats. She was thirsty now. Could she get a drink from the bathroom? She might wake Sunni if she got up. Or Ruth. Or Sam. She didn’t think Ruth would mind, but what about Sam? He’d been out working until late, Ruth said. He’d be very tired. People got angry when they were tired. This book is a work of fiction. She’ll be fine tomorrow,’ Addie said. She looked at Ruth. ‘She just needed more sleep, that’s all.’ I absolutely love Snow Foal - it's so truthful, tender and touching. A book to read in a day and remember for a lifetime (Dame Jacqueline Wilson, author of Tracy Beaker) -When eleven-year-old Addie goes to stay with a foster family on a remote Exmoor farm in the midst of a very cold winter, she is full of hurt, anger and a deep mistrust of everyone around her. Until one day, when she rescues a tiny wild foal from the moorland snow and Addie discovers that perhaps she's not so alone after all. stars maybe. This was a really nice read, and I think it did a great job exploring the issue of children in care with Adverse Childhood Experiences and just how painful, confusing and complicated it is for them. My heart really went out to Addie, as it seemed like she was so alone in the world, with no mum to look after her, no friends, nobody who was really there for her, until she had the foal of course, and eventually Jude and some of the others at the farmhouse, as it was lovely seeing her developing friendship with Jude, with his character arc being a really heartwarming one, though it was very bittersweet when he got adopted and thus had to leave the farmhouse, as it was wonderful how he got adopted by such a lovely, kind, genuine, caring couple yet heartbreaking for Addie how she had lost him who was her only real friend at the house. The bedroom was so dark. The deepest dark Addie had ever seen. It was full of silence. Full of nothing. He added: “She worked Tuesday and she goes to Lambourn tomorrow for a jump there (over Grand National style fences).

How much my daughter and I enjoyed Snow Foal! It's a gripping sensitively written book' (Jenny McLachlan, author of The Land of Roar) - I also felt rather annoyed and cynical when they discussed bullies going through a tough time themselves, and that that's why they bully, as (and especially with having been the victim of severe bullying myself) I just can't stand it when people try to condone a bully's behaviour and make out that they should be sympathised with, that there actually the victims and what not. I know this wasn't a primary focus of the book but it still annoyed me as this kind of idea about bullies actually being victims themselves always really gets under my skin, as if it's normal for them to take their problems out on you that have nothing to do with you. Jeg synes det er lidt irriterende, at man ikke til slut får at vide om pigen får lov til at komme hjem til sin mor igen. We’ve been on a massive rollercoaster with her the whole way through. When she got her leg injuries and went to be put in foal by Sir Percy I honestly thought her racing career was over.

This poignant novel is beautifully written and explores the difficult issues of bullying, neglect and abuse with sensitivity. Rather than dwelling on why the children are in foster care, the tale offers insight into their emotions of rejection, confusion, anger and guilt. Despite the challenging subject matter, this is a positive tale, full of hope for a brighter future. The perfect children's book to curl up with and begin the new year. A beautiful and heart-wrenching middle grade debut for kids aged 9 to 11, full of love, healing, friendship and hope. Perfect for fans of Jacqueline Wilson's Tracey Beaker , Cathy Cassidy, Pax and Gill Lewis. I absolutely love Snow Foal – it's so truthful, tender and touching. A book to read in a day and remember for a lifetime.' – Dame Jacqueline Wilson We will do a good bit of work around Lambourn after she has jumped and that will basically be most of her hard work done. The purpose of jumping the fences tomorrow is more a case of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.
