This book mirrors what actually happened within the subprime mortgage market - which I remember the fallout of quite well. It also questions the use of the media by people in power for their own ends and means. This is also something I see quite a lot these days, especially by politicians "leaking" stuff to friendlies to gauge the public interest prior to announcing in the House. If only the Speaker would really get to grips with this, but that's by the by. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ It’s sometimes said that if you want something done, ask a busy person. Such a one is ITN’s singular political editor, Robert Peston, who is opening the High Holiday season with a flourish. I think we might all agree that Mr Peston is an intelligent, clever man who knows what he is talking about? If so, perhaps he would care to explain to his readers why he chooses to dumb down such an intelligently written book as The Crash with an avalanche of totally unnecessary expletives, for example, 70 variations of the f-word? He says: “I grew up in a household where my father [the Labour life peer Baron Maurice Peston] was militantly atheist. He became this arch-rationalist at the London School of Economics and decided that all religion was hocus-pocus. Although there were all these behavioural things in his case that he never shook off — he could never bring himself to eat bacon or pork sausages, for example. The only thing he would cook for himself was cholesterol on a plate (this turns out to be worsht and eggs)”.

There’s no shortage of oys in the world but Jewish News takes every opportunity to celebrate the joys too, through projects like Night of Heroes, 40 Under 40 and other compelling countdowns that make the community kvell with pride. This is a rollercoaster of a story. Early in the book, there is an explanation of the Subprime mortgage market which was complex but essential for the storyline. Describing it as “the emperor’s new clothes” was excellent. Election Day is looming and Gil is determined to find out the truth and try to get justice for Clare. I’m sure readers will be trying to work out which politicians have been rewritten in here and to be honest I didn’t care. The Whistleblower is fiction but you might think otherwise when you read it. For Tony Blair read Johnny Todd, a Prime Minister in waiting. Any skeletons in his cupboard? You bet! We’ll start by talking about three or four different issues that really matter to people, such as the cost of living, the battle against inflation. Then there’ll be other business stories —for example, I’m completely obsessed with Artificial Intelligence at the moment and what effect that is going to have on people’s jobs”. AS Gil digs further and askes more questions he finds himself deeper and deeper in a rabbit hole. Most people have their doubts about politicians and journalists and this book definitely feeds the mind for the conspiracies, secrets and lies that abound Parliament and also the tabloids.

WTF: What have we done? Why did it happen? How do we ta…

I think of this as the first in a three-book series. The next will be set during the banking crisis and then the third – if I get around to it, which I hope I do – will be set more or less where we are now. He has a final, gnomic message summing up his feelings about Yom Kippur: “Guilt follows me around like a stray dog, though I can never name the dog or the guilt. Atoning is liberation for me — and the dog.” In the first collaboration between media outlets from different faiths, Jewish News worked with British Muslim TV and Church Times to produce a list of young activists leading the way on interfaith understanding. A solid thriller but I feel the ending let it down a little, it just didn't seem as neatly tied up as I wanted it to be.

Great characters, gripping plot, and as ever I feel I have managed to learn a lot while also never feeling that I am not reading a novel. Elvis, too, is put on Leonora’s trail by his boss, the mysterious and powerful El Mago. As their paths converge and they get closer to the truth, their lives become more dangerous. I can’t wait to see what Moreno-Garcia does next. The Dark Overall, I found it to be an interesting, multilayered political thriller that maintained my interest throughout.

This is an excellent insight into the 2007 financial crash, but, cleverly wrapped in a murder mystery and it really works. Unlike other Jewish media, we do not charge for content. That won’t change. Because we are free, we rely on advertising to cover our costs. This vital lifeline, which has dropped in recent years, has fallen further due to coronavirus. The author Robert Peston, may have wrote a novel based on what he knows, but he has weaved tragedy into the storyline. However, I actually found myself really enjoying this...part thriller, part murder mystery, part political tale.

The Whistleblower by Robert Peston review | Evening Standard

His search for the truth leads him down some dark political alleys and it seems Clare knew a lot more than she ever told... There's a mix of facts and fiction, there's a harsh picture of the world of the master of the universe and the politician who were supporting them.

But when Gil's estranged sister Clare dies in a hit-and-run, he begins to believe it was no accident. Clare knew some of the most sensitive secrets in government. One of them might have got her killed. Authentic feeling (which I would expect considering the author) and clever it brings home everything you half guess about what may go on in the higher echelons of power, it is all scarily believable and highly addictive. I read this book from a pre-publication copy kindly supplied by the publisher, but this is an honest review with no concession to their generosity. I already liked Gil when I first met him in The Whistleblower, and or relationship blossoms through this book too. I also like Peston's style of writing. How he writes very intelligent, detailed, stories but manages to get the crux across in layman's terms without patronising the reader.
