However, others feel that Miranda's speech here is correctly attributed. As the play progresses, Caliban refers to Miranda as his "mistress", [17] saying that it was Miranda who explained to him what the moon and stars are. [18] Alonso is delighted when Prospero reveals that his son, Ferdinand, is alive and engaged to Miranda. Her lines spoken at the end of Act V, Scene I are the inspiration for the title of the novel Brave New World. The Tempest is believed to be the last play Shakespeare wrote alone. [1] [2] [3] In this play there are two candidate soliloquies by Prospero which critics have taken to be Shakespeare's own "retirement speech". Trinculo does not have a very high opinion of either his own intelligence or that of Caliban and Stephano.

Shakespeare’s The Tempest plot summary - The Tempest - BBC

Miranda, who is a teenager, has lived on the island since she was three years old with only her father and Caliban for company. Meanwhile Caliban’s crazies are all off to kill Prospero, so Ariel distracts them with magical clothes and then chases them away with spirit dogs. And at last Prospero reveals himself and gives his bro Antonio and King Alonso a big telling off, then forgives them. A noble Neapolitan, Gonzalo / Out of his charity, who being then appointed / Master of this design, did give us, with / Rich garments, linens, stuffs, and necessaries / Which since have steaded much’ (Prospero, 1:2) Stephano is butler to Alonso, King of Naples. He was washed up on the island alone and wanders around drunk until he meets up with his friend Trinculo, who is hiding under a cloak with Caliban. Stephano shares his wine with them and Caliban thinks he is a god. Stephano agrees to kill Prospero, rule the island and become Caliban’s new master. However, Ariel watches them and makes sure they do not cause any real trouble. Prospero is the main protagonist of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. He is probably the most unusual of Shakespeare’s major characters in that, although he is a human being with human qualities, including human faults, he has magical powers: he has the ability to control the weather, the conditions on the island on which he lives, and also the actions and movements of people and the spirits who also live on the island.During the encounter Miranda once again stands up to her father, arguing against his harsh treatment of Ferdinand and defending his honour when Prospero refers to him as nothing more than another Caliban. The audience may also have seen Prospero as a type of magus - an educated man who studied science and was believed to gain magical powers through their studies. A magus could use their powers for good or might be tempted to use dark magic. Prospero is the central character of the play. He is a powerful magician who was once the Duke of Milan.
