The COOLPIX L840 is a bit bigger all around than the version it replaces, and it weighs just a tiny bit longer. Factor at the four AA batteries along with a card and you are carrying 538 g. Therefore, if you’re searching for something which’s light and compact, the L840 is not it. It is a small little smaller than the PowerShot SX530 HS. However, it weighs almost a hundred g (three and a half oz ) more. If you want to get a bit more hands on the next option down will allow you to select the scene mode yourself, with a choice of 18 at your fingertips including the usual subjects, like Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Beach and Sunset. There are also a couple of less familiar options.

The L840’s lens will focus as close as 1cm from your subject when the lens is at maximum wide-angle, and it even manages to focus fairly closely when zoomed in. If it’s a lightweight compact bridge super-zoom you’re looking for, the PowerShot SX410 IS is the one to go for. It’s significantly smaller and lighter than the other two models, weighing a mere 313 grams. The COOLPIX L840 has optical image stabilisation which Nikon calls Vibration Reduction or VR. This moves the lens elements to compensate for camera movement and reduce the chances of blurred photos due to camera shake at slow shutter speeds.

You can use the zoom while recording and thankfully, unlike on the earlier COOLPIX L830, if you disable the digital zoom in the set up menu it disables it for both movie recording and photos.
