About this deal

Professor Barry Carpenter, OBE, PhD, University of Worcester M is for Autism invites us into the world of a young woman with autism and allows us to view it through her lens. What an intriguing world we enter. This is a book to be read by everyone! Being a mama is HARD, but as Abbie says: "Hard is not the same thing as bad." This book helps give mamas the courage, wisdom, and tools to embrace the hard in the face of our culture and reap the rewards that come from perseverance and sacrifice.

Chivalry": this is a story that makes you smile and where attention to detail reaches a high level, turning a lopsided smile to humans, with their quirks and weaknesses. Whereas Fragile Things had decidedly adult content, this one gets no more racy than the suggestion of teens having "a time good" at a house party in "How to Talk to Girls at Parties". The rest is mostly stuff such as a crime noir version of nursery rhymes, a troll-under-the-bridge story, foodies in search of the ultimate meal, and a take on the quest for the Holy Grail in which an ordinary housewife finds the Grail at a thrift store and won't give it up to Sir Galahad because it looks nice on her mantel. (I could totally see one of the Pythons in drag playing the woman.) By telling M's story, the students of Limpsfield Grange School have told their own stories and have done everyone a valuable service. Not only have they provided awareness that autism doesn't just affect boys and helped readers get priceless insight into how autism works, but they have also helped parents and caregivers of kids with autism, like myself, be more aware of their own behaviors and provided those with autism with a book that just might help them understand more about this thing called autism that seems to take up so much of the space around and within them. M's counselor's messages to M about her value as a person being about so much more than her autism were something that all people should hear, and I'm incredibly grateful that I discovered this little gem of a book.I think this is an especially helpful book for moms of toddlers and younger children. She challenges you in a way that is Biblical and counterculture. We are called to be developing ourselves in God and His Word as we raise our children to the glory of God. Her chapter on soul-care vs self-care was good food for thought. Not sure I would explain it in those words as I see it as one holistic way of life. M's story is great. I hope that you'll read the book to understand Autism/Asperger's from a more personal angle. I give this book 4 paw prints from Booklover Catlady.

I’m still new to motherhood, but it’s incredibly important to me to be equipped with Biblical wisdom and knowledge before I am confronted with certain situations or problems. This book is one that I know for sure I’ll be referring to and rereading. I loved the humor sprinkled throughout, but more importantly the biblical approach to a wide variety of topics within motherhood. This is one of those mystery books where everybody "knows" what the situation is, who the good guys are and who the villain is - until the investigation starts. I am utterly in love with this book. Part secret journal, part Perks of Being a Wallflower, part every girl, part just-like-me (yep, I have always seen letters as having personalities!), M is for Autism is a secret gem. We all need to know, after all, that there IS a "Sisterhood of the Spectrum". And I'm proud to say that M fits in perfectly! Metamorphosis is the transformation of an animal during its life cycle (from larva to adult). For example, the larval stage of butterflies and moths (called the caterpillar) metamorphoses into a winged, flying adult (the adult butterfly or moth). The first short story in the collection has a private investigator trying to find out who pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall. Apparently, it wasn’t an accident, it was murder. The cliches and one-liners fly like bullets in this opener. This story has a strong “Jasper Fforde” feel to it and is a comical start to the collection. This is a quirky, eclectic mix of wonder, fear, beauty. The believable and unreal. Put together with fab illustrations by Teddy Kristiansen, this is a most enjoyable read. But the response was, don’t complain. Just be a better mother. Use your own strength and be better than the mediocre mothers around you. And whatever you do, don’t be mediocre too. A mesa is a land formation with a flat area on top and steep walls - usually occurring in dry areas.
