As a G&T I adore The Lakes Gin. The profile doesn’t change much when tonic is added – a bit more sweetness and citrus, with the peppery notes dialed down a notch. Compared side-by-side to the original, it’s less bitter, more delicate almost, and definitely sweeter with the orange peel coming through. Cumbria is home to the Lakes District and, consequently, the Lakes Distillery. It was founded in 2011 by Paul Currie, who you may know as one of the co-founders of the Isle of Arran Distillery. You'll find the distillery in a Lake District national park within a painstakingly renovated 160-year-old farmstead on the banks of the River Derwent. Because of said location, they can’t construct any additional buildings, so they have a very impressive distillery-in-a-room set-up to distil their spirits. Our small head office in Newcastle employs staff in finance, marketing, HR, and IT, amongst other roles. For their whisky distillation, they have a pair of custom-designed McMillan stills, as well as a smaller still for their Lakes Gin and Vodka, which were released in 2014. A cool feature of the Lakes Distillery is that their descending lyne arms from the stills can send spirit vapours into two different shell and tube condensers, one made of stainless steel and one made of copper, depending on the style of spirit they want to create. Using only a select few botanicals, we achieve flavour precision, ensuring every nuance is pitch perfect and crystal clear on the palate. Less is more.

Set in what was once a Victorian farmstead’s cattle parlour, it is the perfect place for a kitchen focused on local food and honest, hearty flavours. Refreshingly floral and vibrant, intricate flavour infusion creates a characterful gin liqueur with a lively, fresh finish. This is quite a deviation on the original recipe which contained botanicals such as bilberry, heather, hawthorn and mint, many of them foraged from the local area. From a brand perspective, I’d perhaps have liked to have seen The Lakes keep some of these foraged ingredients in the new recipe and retain that connection of provenance.
