When Knob Creek launched in 1992, it was an anomaly. At the time, small-batch bourbon with a steep price tag was not a common sight. Since then, America has experienced a bourbon boom, with whiskey lovers willing to shell out serious cash for premium booze. Save the date for the opening of an innovative new distillery” cried the invite. “Aha!", I thought,…

Your taster is off. Knob Creek 9 has a unique complex Bourbon heavenly taste. Obviously everyone has different tasters, what is great for one is trash for another. Another factor that can affect a whiskey’s “smoothness” is its age. A younger whiskey is often more likely to be harsher and more astringent than an older whiskey. This is because the longer a whiskey ages, the more time it has to filter through char in the barrel and develop complex flavor notes. So, if you’re looking for a smooth and easy-drinking whiskey, you should look for one with a low ABV and/or an aged flavor profile. I’ll repeat, though. This isn’t great bourbon. It’s serviceable bourbon, and it’s cheap, and it came in a freaking giant bottle that lasted me for a great deal of the past year. It made many Old Fashioneds, and I saluted its empty bottle like the grave of a comrade-in-arms. We went through a lot, together, me and my bottle of Knob Creek. Here’s to you, friend. Finish: Rapidly growing capsaicin spice, oak, char & dryness build into the long finish. The capsaicin spice turns towards spicy ginger snaps later on. Moderate burn. Starts Differently Than It Finishes When the very first bottle of Knob Creek was released, its mission was to restore whiskey to the way it was meant to be -- patiently aged and full-flavored. This commitment not only helped Knob Creek overturn all the softer, milder, whiskeys on the market, it was also a major step toward making the small-batch whiskey movement what it is today.

Even though Knob Creek is Jim Beam’s attempt to stay relevant in the world of small-batch bourbons, it still has plenty of delicious offerings. I really like the Smoked Maple bourbon with my sweet tea, but I am partial to the sweeter bourbons. If you are too, I would suggest giving it a try. But Which One Is Best? Maker’s Mark has a deep rust-color with a leaning toward orange, whereas Knob Creek has a deep caramel color, like burnt orange. If you prefer to mix your bourbon with another drink either label has an option that will work. As I mentioned with Knob Creek, its Smoked Maple bourbon is great with sweet tea. Maker’s Mark has its Cask Strength offering which is perfect in a glass of cold Coca-Cola.

I’m marking this “Not Recommended” because I’ve had better Beam products and in fact better bourbons in this (very low) price range. Don’t be put off, though, if you’re buying this for mixing. It excels at that!
