About this deal

Sub-10 for the first time ever! All parsed and only a slight hold up at LOFT. Noted JOY DIVISION but certainly didn’t see the nina (amazing spot Tim!). Lots of write-ins which is rare for me so knew this must be on the easier side. Many thanks Marty and Rolytoly. I’ve looked up the blog to that puzzle now and although Felix joined in to confirm there was a Nina the comments ended before details were revealed, so that must have happened in another discussion or another place. Referring to my own notes made at the time the hidden references were to a number of teachers at the school, not just the one as I had thought earlier. It’s kind of the ideal organisation. It’s so rare you encounter a company which is exactly how you imagine a company could be. Kind and virtuous. And isn’t hell-bent on making more and more money.

Indie band Half Man Half Biscuit have never been ones to court publicity, having once turned down the opportunity to appear on Channel 4 music show The Tube to watch their beloved football team, Tranmere Rovers. I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, who In 2010, a Facebook campaign was mounted with the aim of saving BBC 6 Music from threatened closure and, as a sign of protest, to get "Joy Division Oven Gloves" from Achtung Bono to No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart on 12 April 2010. [5] [6] In the event, it entered the Singles Chart that week at No. 56 and the Independent Singles Chart at No. 3. [7] [8] Whether or not the campaign was influential, BBC 6 Music was saved. I didn’t parse JOY, having never heard of that meaning of transport, and I also NHO of EMENDS or PICCALILLI but the wordplay and crossers were clearKeep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. The Joy Division connections passed me by but, thankfully, did not get in the way of a good QC. I went through steadily (I try not to rush – it just leads to errors in my case) but I was still 4+ mins under target. I was surprised to be within 1.5K for a welcome change. Think we heard about it in school on the Tuesday (20th?), after Tony Wilson had done the town crier sketch on the Monday(19th?). Some of the lads who had seen Joy Division at Eric’s were especially smug, as they knew they had witnessed something really special, though some of them were devastated … Our A-Levels started a few days later, and I know at least one person whose results were probably affected. I think it was the day I started to realise how much I’d missed by not making the effort some of those other lads had made to get to the Saturday punk matinees for under-18’s at Eric’s.

Wow indeed, great catch Tim and Verlaine, and thanks a lot to Templar for the lyrics – it made listening to the (rather good) song all the better. Half the puzzle in there is right: a superb effort from Marty. The Half Man Half Biscuit plan follows a successful internet campaign to make Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name the Christmas No 1 in protest at the monopoly of the festive chart by X Factor contestants. Great crossword – circa 20 minutes for me. Noted Joy Division and looked for more but not seen by me so congratulations to Tim. None of this merch has anything to do with the band or the person who designed the cover, Peter Saville. The decision to shut 6 Music was greeted with a howl of protest from listeners, trade unions, the music industry and the station's own presenters. A Save BBC 6 Music group on Facebook has nearly 200,000 members, and the BBC has received more than 8,500 complaints about the closure, due at the end of next year. People are dressing up. One guy is King of Hi-Vis, a song they’ve only played five times – and he was there at them all

The commercial radio top 40, The Big Top 40 Show, has a top 10 based entirely on iTunes sales figures, allowing listeners to influence chart positions during the course of the Sunday afternoon show. Trad. Arr." is short for "traditional, arranged (by)", and is often attached to recordings of folk music. Official Independent Singles Chart Top 50: 11 April 2010–17 April 2010". Official Charts . Retrieved 26 February 2016. Mark Thompson, the BBC's director general, sounded the death knell for 6 Music, along with the Asian Network digital station, as part of a wide-ranging review of the corporation's operations, published last month. The music station is home to DJs including Lauren Laverne, Shaun Keaveny and Steve Lamacq. They’ve got a bit of a commune feeling to them. It’s contemporary and it’s modern and it’s very functional. But they all eat together. They’ve got an installation by Olafur Eliasson ['Your Glacial Expectations' by the architect Günther Vogt and Eliasson, a series of five elliptical mirrors that sit in the grounds to the Kvadrat HQ]. There’s a piano. I mean, it’s uncomfortably nice. You begin to think you’re in some kind of Scandi drama. You wonder: where is the dead body? You could say I’ve been a consultant to the company for the last 15 years. But it’s a bit more like being a friend of the family. IRON-ON and DRIED-UP took me the longest. I said to myself “PICCALILLI” immediately on reading clue but waited for all crossers so I would have a chance of getting the number of L’s and C’s right. When I saw JOY DIVISION I thought, aha, maybe I will finally unravel a Nina. But no, that’s all I got till I came here. Your starter for 10 last night: “What innovative band is the subject of Jon Savage’s oral history ‘This Searing Light, The Sun and Everything Else”? The band released two 1980s albums, ‘Closer’ and ‘Unknown Pleasures’.” You don’t start fuming when you can’t work out how to turn the bedroom lights off in an over-designed boutique hotel? Stain resistant 100 Percent cotton canvas and towelling repelling water and oil, Quilted cotton insulation, Nylon steam and grease proof barrier, ensuring protection against steam and grease

Much to enjoy here, though I found myself in biff-then-parse mode for a number of the clues, only working out the wordplay once I had the answer rather than the other way round. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/apr/27/half-man-half-biscuit-fanatical-followers-ashes-wirral-dukla-prague-tranmere-rovers-subbuteo Anyway I completely missed the presence of the Manchester band when I was solving. Lead singer Ian Curtis had a distinctive, er, fashion sense I guess you’d call it, that might explain the presence of a RAIN COAT in the unches towards the bottom. And the definitions you gave of yammering might describe his vocal deliveryThanks to Marty and Rolytoly and to all above who provided enlightenment on the subject of the nina.
