About this deal

The Hue Signe has never been really affordable. The previous model already cost 269 euros and now Philips Hue is going one better: 299 euros are due for the large floor lamp. We certainly don't need to discuss the fact that this is a lot of money. It should also be clear that the Signe is not to everyone's taste. However, I find that the gradient technology offers a much more exciting experience. The best thing about being connected through the Bridge, to my home Wi-Fi, is that I could control the Signe from anywhere in the house or even while away from home. So although a bit more involved than connecting via Bluetooth, it was totally worth the effort. With the Hue Bluetooth app (available on iOS and Android), you can control this light directly from your smart phone, without the need for the Hue bridge. The app can control up to ten lights. As the Signe Floor Lamp has three individually controllable zones, each scene automatically applies to them. To be fair, the app does a good job of choosing the right colours and blending them together.

So at night time the Gradient Signe really pops. Imagine a lightsaber being lit up in a dark cave. And that's great for adding mood to rooms in the twilight hours or, excitedly for anyone who also invests in a Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box, incredible extra synchronized mood lighting for movies, TV shows, or playing video games. This is something that not only annoys me about the Gradient Signe, but also about many other products. Although the Play Lightbar and the HDMI Sync Box now have a power supply unit with three connectors, it is simply not powerful enough. In my opinion, a solution with USB-C would be really modern and flexible.

The Signe’s colors are electric. Again powered by a color wheel, you can choose between one, two, and three colors across the LED strip, making for a limitless combination of choices. This can be done manually, or you can choose from the innumerable scenes in the Hue scene gallery, which are perfect for inspiration if you’re unsure what kind of lights look best. There’s everything from blossom and crocus to sunsets, Miami party vibes, Chinatown red, incredible Arctic Aurora, and more. Even holiday and Halloween scenes get updated throughout the year, and each scene has its own custom level of optimum brightness that you can adjust. You can also tweak the colors yourself for optimum personalization. Choose from 16 million colours including warm to cool white light to create an ambiance that suits any mood. Perfect for film nights, parties, bedtime stories, or just relaxing. Add a Hue Bridge (sold separately) to your smart lights to experience the full suite of Philips Hue features. With a Hue Bridge, you can add up to 50 smart lights to control throughout the home, create routines, and control lights while away from home. The Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp is similar to the Govee Lyra Floor Lamp, in that both are floor-standing lamps with gradient light strips in them. While the Govee options needed some assembling, and the finish wasn’t great, the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp comes pre-assembled in its box.

Once plugged in the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp can be connected to your Hue app using Bluetooth or Zigbee. Hue really comes into its own when used with a Bridge and Zigbee, so that’s the version that I went for. Being in the UK, I was sent the UK and EU version of the lamp (a US version is also available), which meant I had a UK and EU plug to switch between. The lamp arrived with the EU plug attached, but switching this to the UK plug was simply a matter of sliding the EU plug upwards to release, and replacing with the UK version.

In the standard case, the Philips Hue Gradient Signe is aligned to a wall and there the colours also appear washed out, so the transitions are not so hard. Nevertheless, I would recommend not selecting colours that are too far apart. A real rainbow effect like with the long lightstrips cannot be created with the short Signe. The app is where the Philips Hue Gradient Signe comes to life – and it's via the app that you can set up the lamp to your requirements.

The main difference between the two Philips Hue Signe lights is their size. The floor lamp is notably larger, and therefore delivers a higher lumen output , with a larger LED bulb included. Philips Hue Gradient Signe table lamp review: Design It turns out that Hue products can be connected to Bluetooth OR the Bridge; they can’t be controlled via both simultaneously. So, if you've already connected Alexa to Hue Bluetooth, disable the Philips Hue Alexa skill in the Alexa app, and then reconnect it to the Hue Bridge via the Hue app voice assistant section. This lets you, say, have the top of the Gradient Signe blue, the middle red, and the bottom yellow, with a nice gradient transition between each color down the length of the light bar. You can also simply select Philips Hue scenes, such as Savannah Sunset, to have the bar display a curated lighting ambiance.
