Cosimano skillfully combines suspense and laughs in the manner of Janet Evanovich’s early (and best) novels, finished off with a metafictional twist.”— New York Times Book Review Cosimano’s inspiration for the book lay close to home: “Finlay’s story begins in a crowded Panera during a midday rush, which is exactly where the idea for the book first came to me. My longtime critique partners were helping me brainstorm through a particularly violent plot over lunch when we realized that a diner at the table beside us seemed a little uncomfortable. After all, how could they know that we were only plotting fictitious murders?

The story continued to irritate me, as Finlay makes dumb move after dumb move. And the bad guys are stereotypes and also not believable (in real life, they’re more brutal). Oh, and did I say there are ridiculous, eyeball-rolling-worthy coincidences? Obviously, my Complaint Board runneth over. I’m tempted to enumerate each of the little problems, but I’ll spare you. You get the gist. But hey, don’t pay much attention to me: This book has an overall 4-star rating. I’m for sure the outlier on this one.Elle Cosimano does it again! A funny, fast-paced sequel that’s part rom-com, part mystery, pure joy!” —Chantel Guertin, bestselling author of Instamom

Finlay has two kids under four. She has a jerk of an ex-husband who never misses an opportunity to smirk upon her. And he has just fired the nanny – a help Finlay desperately needs if she’s ever going to pull herself out of financial dependency and looming deadlines for her new book. Finlay and Vero head to Atlantic City, where their “getaway” acts as a cover for a deal with a loan shark, a search for a stolen car, and the saving of Vero’s crush Javi. And things become extra complicated when Finlay’s ex and her mother accompany them. Part comedy of errors, part genuine thriller… Deftly balancing genre conventions with sly, tongue-in-cheek comments on motherhood and femininity, Cosimano crafts a deliciously twisted tale.”— Booklist And then, just the fact that she’s a writer who spends a lot of time researching how best to dispose of a dead body… You have to appreciate the irony. Okay, so this is what I had to contend with going into this one. I can’t help it if I’m overanalytical, I really can’t. You can tell I became obsessed! I couldn’t help but run through the logistics and appearance. I kept thinking I must be too dumb to figure it out—that in our universe, duct tape and hair somehow go together. (Please chime in if I’m blind to the obvious. Is this some common practice and I just didn’t get the mom memo on it?)okay i am so not the target audience for this, and i still really loved it. and i was constantly surprised, which is something i didnt expect going in! but it did touch on some dark things, so i will post some tw/cw down below, but highly recommend this to anyone, even if you think it's not for you! (maybe especially if you think it's not for you!) Part screwball comedy, part morality tale, the amusing Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is also a tale about parenting, bad divorces, reinventing oneself, rising above misery and, well, becoming a hit woman. It’s a solid, thoughtful and funny yet poignant mystery that never once becomes a one-note story.”— South Florida Sun Sentinel A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family--and a new love--changes the course of her life.

I am going to say, though, the 5 stars I gave it is mostly a reflection of my personal enjoyment level. Realistically, I think it would be closer to a solid 4 stars. You mean cosmetology. And no, just because she was Theresa’s sorority sister does not make her your Aunt Amy.” Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a fun read, with lots of snarky banter and a fast-moving plot full of twists and turns. Recommended.Finlay Donovan is Killing It should have been on my "Like List." It did have a some elements that I did really enjoy. My favorite part of the book was how Vero and Finlay met.
