About this deal

There was plenty of mystery and intrigue throughout, which mixed well with Amy and her experiences of travelling around the country on her own as a woman, and finding people who knew Aurelia and didn't judge Amy because of her past and accepted her for who she was. This was such an entertaining novel. I loved both Aurelia and Amy. Even though, they weren't sisters by blood, they were sisters of the heart and it warmed my heart to see Aurelia do everything that she could to save Amy. Aurelia's parents were awful! I just wanted to punch Aurelia's mother!! They were so mean to Amy. I was so happy when Amy set upon her treasure hunt that was set-up by Aurelia. Through this treasure hunt we were able to get to know Aurelia better through letters that she left behind for Amy. It was refreshing to watch Amy mature through this time as well. She was such a nice girl and after what she had been through, I was hoping for wonderful things to happen to her. We also got to meet some interesting characters through this adventure. My favorite: Mrs. Riverthorpe. Now she was quite the character!!

Your examination of the devotion that exists between friends after death is profoundly moving. By any chance is it grounded in your own experiences of loss? How does Henry Mead’s presence in Bath change the quality of Amy’s stay at Hades House and her perception of life in general? What qualities does Henry have that mirror Amy’s personality? How is Henry more compelling than Quentin from Amy’s point of view? Turns out this historical romance is at least as solid on the historical interest and story suspense, and light on romantic manipulation, as was the late Georgette Heyer. It reminds me more of the better Heyer novels, and even of the romantic classicists like the Brontes and Austen, than of the contemporary historical romances.

Two terribly boring suitors appear and for half a second I thought the author might do something interesting there. Like, maybe have her not end up with either one! Or make the clearly sus lord not so sus after all? Because otherwise why so predictable? Or the goodhearted future doctor not so goodhearted? Because why make him so predictable...? No? But no. The ending is a boring, bland mess full of characters I really don't care about and tying up loose ends that would have been more interesting left untied. I loved The House at Silvermoor. Tracy’s writing is always so warm and the story is both romantic and compelling’ Rosanna Ley, author of The Lemon Tree Hotel Ha sido realmente una delicia leer este libro, cada página, cada cosa dicha, Amy con su enorme valentía y humildad, no la humildad de clase, si no la humildad de alma, esa que la hace cumplir con su amiga hasta el mismo final y en ocasiones sintiendo que tiene que sacrificarse a sí misma para lograrlo, es que ha sido realmente algo precioso de leer. A promising description of mystery, treasure hunt, and self-discovery turned into a slow and somewhat boring read.Set in England in 1848, it’s full of romance and mystery, taking the form of a scavenger hunt in which the heroine, Amy Snow, follows a trail left behind in letters by her late friend and mentor, ebullient heiress Aurelia Vennaway. Seventeen-year-old Amy owes her life to Aurelia, who had found her as a newborn, abandoned in the snow on her wealthy family’s Surrey estate. Lord and Lady Vennaway had acceded to their daughter’s wishes in letting Amy grow up at Hatville Court but always resented her presence. Before Aurelia’s tragic early death from a heart ailment, she developed a clever way of ensuring Amy’s future livelihood while broadening her social horizons – and attempting to make up for her family’s hateful behavior.

As Amy navigates the strange new world of romantic attachments, she becomes aware to herself as a sexual being, an object of desire, and—as a wealthy woman—of possessing a new kind of social currency. Have members of your group talk about when and where they first experienced romantic love. How did it shape their feelings about love in general? How did the prospect of commitment affect their feelings? Consider discussing disappointments or unexpected discoveries in the course of their romantic journeys.
