One of the more artisanal vegan cheese producers to have at least partially broken through to the mainstream, Tyne Chease might have misspelt the word cheese, but we’ll forgive them that because they have created some excellent products. Using traditional cheesemaking techniques (but without the need for cows!) their nut-based cheeses are cultured and aged and there’s a strong emphasis on the flavour of the end product. Bute Island Foods This could be seen to be a rather general category and could technically cover some of the cheese that also feature in other categories. Generally speaking, this category would cover the higher-end more gourmet vegan cheese options, often produced from organic and/or locally sourced ingredients and sometimes in small batches. With more and more people exploring veganism, there are plenty of new meat and dairy alternatives out there to try, but vegan cheese is one that many people find hard to enjoy. Depending on which international cheese authority you believe, there are between 51 and 1,000 different varieties of dairy cheese. These can differ by moisture levels, firmness, country or area of origin, the source of the milk used and how mouldy it is. With regards health it is commonly accepted that in almost all ways a well-planned vegan diet is a match for one that includes meats and dairy (as we explain in detail in our article on the health reasons to go vegan). In addition, a vegan diet automatically excludes a number of foods that are known to be extremely unhealthy. Chief amongst these are red and processed meats but vegan diets also tend to be far lower in saturated fat too. What’s more, on average, vegans consume far more fibre and are more likely to consume a wide range of fruit and veg too. But that does not mean that all vegan products are automatically healthy. When it comes to vegan cheese, it is something of a mixed bag when compared to dairy cheese. Since moving into a house on my own five years ago, I have a 99.9% dairy-free home. I say 99.9% dairy-free because occasionally I will eat something that contains dairy but, hand on heart, I can say I have only ever had vegan cheese in my fridge since living here. Stuart really liked the smoky slices. This really surprised me as he isn’t usually keen to try vegetarian things or vegan things and would rather have “the real thing”. When I was an adolescent, I toyed with the idea of becoming vegetarian and even vegan tooo. I stopped eating meat and poultry as well as fish too and we tried to cobble along as a family, catering to my new way of eating and tiptoeing around my meat eating family! My new wy of eating didn’t last long as I simply found it too restrictive, but these days being a vegetarian or vegan is completely different.

While I prefer Violife Epic Mature Cheddar Flavour (see below), Violife original flavour grated is great for those who either can’t handle a cheese grater easily, don’t want to wash up a grater or just want the convenience of ready-grated cheese. Vegan cheese has a range of ingredients but you must be careful if you are allergic to the ingredients. Is vegan cheese healthy?They use a mixture of coconut oil and (non-GMO) modified starch and various flavours to create the different varieties. They also have a parmesan-like Prosociano Wedge that is perfect for grating over pasta dishes. In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes in their sauce, with the shallots, garlic cloves, olive oil, oregano and red pepper flakes . The smoky cheddar slices of cheddar are perfect for an addition to a burger, on a platter or on regular or toasted sandwiches. If you want a vegan toastie this is definitely my favourite cheese for it! It has an amazing smoky flavour and is so delicious! Violife original flavour grated Sorry M&S, but this was by far my least favourite cheese out of the three, but I guess the consistency was reasonably okay.

Like the environmental considerations, when it comes to ethics, there are very few arguments that dairy cheese is more ethical than cheese made from plants. To produce dairy cheese, cows are held captive and milked until they are not able to produce sufficient quantities (and are then sent to slaughter). But they also have their calves taken from them soon after giving birth to them and these calves are often slaughtered for veal and to produce the rennet that is used in the production of some non-vegetarian cheeses and which is taken from the stomach of the slaughtered calf. The Spread Me products from Green Vie include tapioca maltodextrin and water, as well as their usual mix of coconut oil and starch to produce the creamy texture. I'd try both again but I think, when I fully switch to veganism, I'll try the advice of my friend and swerve any alternatives for a good few months. There's plenty of delicious vegan food out there to keep me distracted during that time - I hope. Again, I have to admit I haven’t tried Violife smoky cheddar flavour slices yet. Not because I’m scared but because I’ve been calorie counting and my lunches have consisted mostly of fruit and yoghurt, not sandwiches. To garnish add rosemary sprigs, a cup of vegan parmesan, a sprinkle of chilli flakes, sea salt, and add vegan butter to serve.

Available from an increasing number of shop, including TheVeganKindSupermarket, Bute Island’s Grated Sheese comes in the following flavours: Grated Mozzarella Style, Grated Mild Cheddar Style, Grated Mature Cheddar Style, and Grated Hard Italian Style (similar to parmesan). By using almond milk as the main ingredient of their vegan-friendly cream cheese alternatives, Nush have produced a creamy and tasty product that is much lower in saturated fat than its rivals that use coconut oil. Available in Natural or Chive flavours, this will appeal to the more health conscious among you.

Maybe I should've had this melted on a toastie or had it with something else, but if I wanted vinegar with my cheese I could've just grabbed some Sarsons. Having tried the vegan cheese cold, I thought it would be a good idea to use the epic mature cheese in some cooking to see what it was like when heated up. I was told when I received these vegan cheeses for review that some of the cheeses do not melt in the way that we are used to normal cheeses melting, so I was unsure whether heating it up would work but I gave it a shot anyway.

Violife original flavour slices are original cheese slices that you can put on a burger or in a toasted sandwich to still have cheese in your favourite meal. Whilst it does melt a little it is not as stringy as dairy cheese and looks a little different but tastes great.
