About this deal

Financial Crimes Detectives: Financial crimes detectives investigate white-collar crimes such as embezzlement, money laundering, or corporate fraud. They analyze financial records, interview employees and executives, and collaborate with financial experts or forensic accountants to trace the flow of money and uncover fraudulent activities. I loved the whole atmosphere of the Oxford Literary Festival. From breakfast, alongside some of the attendees, who were talking books with each other a mile a minute, to the public event at The Sheldonian where everyone was lively and engaged – I felt I had arrived in a kind of literary heaven. High Stress and Pressure: Detectives face high levels of stress and pressure in their line of work. The urgency to solve cases, the weight of responsibility, and the need to gather accurate evidence can be mentally and emotionally taxing. The constant need for meticulous attention to detail can also contribute to stress levels. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it as well as by how much I actually learned from it.

Adding to Tim Harford’s writing were the bold and bright illustrations by Ollie Mann. The illustrations perfectly complement the information provided without overshadowing it. Combining statistical information with illustrations makes for an interesting reading experience while still teaching young readers something very important. Additionally, detectives have a role in the legal process. They may be required to testify as expert witnesses in court, presenting their findings, and providing insights into their investigations. This requires a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and effective communication with legal professionals. One of the defining characteristics of a detective's workplace is its irregular hours. Detectives are often on call and must be ready to respond to emergencies or crime scenes at any time, which can mean working evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. This flexibility is crucial to ensure prompt responses and continuity in investigations. However, this also means that detectives must be prepared for an unpredictable and demanding work schedule. Conducting Interviews and Interrogations: Detectives interview witnesses, victims, and suspects to gather information and build a comprehensive understanding of the case. They use their skills in effective questioning techniques to elicit valuable information that can help solve the crime. In certain cases, detectives may also conduct interrogations to obtain confessions or additional evidence.

Tim was the first Peter Martin Fellow at the Financial Times, and was a member of the Financial Times editorial board from 2006-2009. He previously worked for Shell and for the World Bank. It was a privilege for me to visit the festival to receive the Bodley Medal. As an incidental blessing I saw Oxford at its most mysterious and atmospheric. It was a day of piercing cold and as I walked through the twilight from the Sheldonian to Christ Church, the streets were empty and the whole city was shutting itself away. Christ Church was silent except for the footfall of unseen persons around corners and the sounds of evensong creeping from behind closed doors. For the first time I understood thoroughly the power of college ghost stories. The last chapter inspires readers to be curious, not just seeing a personal one-sided view. Harford relates his time with the American comedian Stephen Colbert ( The Colbert Report), and how Colbert stimulated curiosity in his viewers and explained how politicians fund campaigns. This chapter finishes by reiterating the points on how to be a Truth Detective and on a positive note: The Oxford festival is the most elegant and atmospheric of literary festivals. It’s a pleasure to both attend and perform there. Tim Harford is peerless at making sense of a complicated world and our place within it. This is a book that all children should read ' - Matthew Syed

A recent report from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health says that climate change is causing an existential threat to the health and wellbeing of all children. Their President Dr Camilla Kingdon tells Jessica why that is, and what can be done. Tim Harford has done a wonderful job with this book. The way he presented the information was smart and easy to understand. His use of relatable situations and comparisons makes this book compelling and accessible. As I am not the target audience for this book yet given how much I took from it, I can only imagine how much Middle-Grade readers will enjoy and learn from this book. You will meet heroic truth detectives, such as Florence Nightingale who started a revolution with a pie chart. You will encounter dastardly villains who have tried to trip us up with dodgy data and misinformation. And you will learn how being smart and savvy with numbers, will help you be smart and savvy about everything else in life too.
