About this deal

A rabbit that sleeps with its eyes open is more sensitive to changes in movement and light – even if they are asleep. This helps the rabbit sense when a predator is approaching or if there’s something they need to be aware or wary of. Studies have found that rabbits will get around eight and a half hours of sleep in a day on average. However, a rabbit that feels very safe and comfortable in their home environment will often get even more sleep ( closer to 12 hours a day). Our rabbits don’t get 8-12 hours of sleep all at once. Instead rabbits are known for taking tiny naps throughout the day. Maybe they’ll get a few longer sleep sessions in every once in a while too. The biggest factor to consider is the safety of your bunny. You are much bigger than they are. If you roll over in your sleep, you could crush your rabbit, injuring or even killing it. You may be familiar with the terms nocturnal and diurnal, which, in relation to animals, means that an animal is active either at night (nocturnal) or during the day (diurnal). Rabbits are neither of these, but rather are called crepuscular, which means they are active during the dusk and dawn hours.

They can breathe fine even when their nose doesn’t wiggle, but a twitching nose helps the rabbit sniff out their environment as their scent glands are stimulated. The Ears Because rabbits sleep with their eyes open and sometimes sit in the same positions that they sleep, it can be difficult to know exactly when a rabbit is sleeping. This is a great adaptation for wild rabbits. It means that predators also don’t know when a rabbit is sleeping. If a predator believes a rabbit is awake, they might decide to go find other prey that will be easier to catch. However, there are some subtle signs you can look for to know when your sweet bunny is actually asleep Nose wiggle Rabbits are crepuscular, meaning they are active at dawn and dusk. This is when rabbits eat, play, exercise, and generally have the most energy. But they also have short energy bursts in between sleeping periods. As rabbits are prone to sleeping with their eyes open, it’s difficult to tell when a rabbit is asleep. A relaxing rabbit, awake and alert, can look similar to a rabbit sleeping deeply. First up, there’s no doubt that these hand painted Sleepy Friends characters are some of the cutest tonies we have seen. The girls loved the figures even before they realised they were tonies – loving their relaxed ‘floppy’ body stance and the fact that they were clearly content and fast asleep. In the wild, rabbits sleep in their underground burrows with the rest of their rabbit family. In these burrows, the wild rabbits are better protected from predators.

A rabbit that feels protected and safe will often sleep more as they don’t feel like they have to be on alert all the time. A bun that feels safe may even sleep up to 12 hours; however, this isn’t all in one go.You also need to think about your own health. If you have asthma or allergies, sleeping with a furry animal may not be a good idea!

Here’s a couple more comments about your rabbit’s sleep. Your rabbit may express both atonic state and myoclonic movements during sleep. What on earth does that mean? An atonic state is when your rabbit is so relaxed that the body of your rabbit feels loose, almost fluid. You might find this scary, but it is normal, and it accompanies the Flop.

How to provide your rabbit with the best sleeping conditions.

As we have already discussed, rabbits have an instinct for self-preservation. In the case of sleep, Rabbits often sleep with their eyes open.
