About this deal

For wound care, we suggest our 24 ppm Silver Gel OTC. For something to add to your daily beauty routine, we recommend the 20 ppm Silver Gel.

A lab study published in Particle and Fibre Toxicology found that when the human lung is exposed to silver nanoparticles, it does not cause adverse effects. Lung cells were only sensitive to high silver-ion concentrations. From the current research, my take is that colloidal silver may work as a potential antimicrobial agent, but it needs to be used appropriately. Only true colloidal silver should be used, and studies indicate that short-term use does not cause adverse side effects. Uses and Benefits Patel S, Srivastava S, Singh MR, Singh D. First, colloidal silver’s ability to control antibiotic-resistant superbugs is impressive. While employed at UCLA Medical School in the 1980s, Dr. Larry C. Ford documented over 650 different disease-causing pathogens that were destroyed in minutes when exposed to small amounts of silver. The exact mechanism of silver as an antibacterial agent is under investigation, but current theories propose a multifaceted approach. Silver has seven proposed actions that aid its antibacterial properties. These are: Colloidal silver” is the term used to describe tiny particles of silver suspended in a liquid ( 1).

Impact of Infection on Wound Healing

The literature supports the use of silver for all infected, open wounds, and burns. 3 Silver acts both to penetrate any existing biofilm and to destroy the microbes contained within. Silver can be used in nanocrystalline form to offer sustained release so that as the biofilm is disrupted, the silver is able to impede the microbes as they become susceptible. 3 Overall, silver use in wound dressings has a low risk for systemic toxicity. The main result of systematic silver use is argyria. This condition, most commonly an outcome of injection or ingestion, appears as silver deposits in the tissue that cause the skin and eyes to take on a gray tint. Argyria can also cause loss of night vision. 3 You’re environmentally exposed to extremely small amounts of silver every day. It’s present in very tiny amounts in drinking water, the food supply, and even the air you breathe ( 8).

What the research indicates is that misuse of colloidal silver, or choosing inexpensive, low-quality products that are not true colloidal silver, can cause adverse side effects. For instance, you may have come across warnings about it causing an irreversible condition called argyria, which is when people turn blue. Silverex Ionic Gel is for external use only. Use it in the exact dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. The affected area should be clean and dry before application. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. Use the medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it. Do not use more than you need as it will not clear your condition faster and some side effects may be increased. If your condition does not get better or gets worse at any time, let your doctor know. You can help this medication work better by keeping the affected areas clean, making sure they are dry, and washing your hands before and after treating the infection. A randomized trial using silver-coated pins in lower-extremity fractures noted a non-significant decrease in culture positivity, although this study was notably underpowered [ 138]. However, an increase in serum silver concentrations prompted the authors to conclude that it was unethical to continue the study without evidence of a clinical benefit. No silver toxicity was reported despite the elevated serum concentration of the metal. Difficult to compare wide variety of applications; recommended for initial/early decontamination of burn wounds Further, silver nanoparticles and silver ions that are ingested can accumulate in your organs. Prolonged use of and exposure to colloidal silver may lead to a condition known as argyria, which results in your skin turning blue-gray due to a buildup of silver ( 8, 12).Gauze bandages soaked in silver nitrate solution and used to dress burn wounds were believed to reduce water loss from the burn surface as well as provide antimicrobial protection [ 23]. However, this technique required frequent attention, with reapplication of silver nitrate solution every two hours and dressing changes at least twice daily, and caused electrolyte imbalance secondary to the egress of electrolytes into the dressing in response to the hypotonicity of the silver nitrate solution [ 23]. This imbalance continues until wound epithelialization is complete and is treated initially by frequent monitoring and repletion of electrolytes and subsequently by routine dietary supplementation with less frequent monitoring [ 8, 23, 24]. If electrolyte depletion persists, an isotonic colloidal silver albuminate solution is recommended [ 8]. Silver has become one of the most commonly used alternatives to topical antibiotics in recent years because of the growing concern over antibiotic resistance. Silver offers a multifaceted antimicrobial approach that makes it less likely for resistance to develop. With its limited and uncommon cytotoxicity, silver can be used to treat infected wounds over time and prevent further complications. For instance, you can potentially treat ringworm ( Tinea capitis) at home with colloidal silver because it’s a potent antifungal. Caused by a fungus that lives on the top layer of the skin, ringworm presents as round, scaly patches.

Consumer advisory: Dietary supplementscontaining silver may cause permanent discoloration of skin and mucousmembranes (argyria). (2009).Early large-scale trials evaluating silver oxide-coated catheters failed to show any benefit and even suggested they were associated with a higher rate of staphylococcal infections [ 104, 107]. However, one study noted a significant benefit for women who received the silver oxide catheters [ 107]. A meta-analysis of eight clinical trials found an overall reduction in the risk of bacteriuria in patients receiving silver-coated urinary catheters (OR 0.59; 95% CI 0.42, 0.84) [ 108]. There was significant heterogeneity between these trials, and further evaluation showed that the benefit was obtained only with the silver alloy catheters (OR 0.24; CI 0.11, 0.52) and not silver oxide-coated catheters (OR 0.79; CI 0.56, 1.10). However, the trials using silver alloy catheters were completed at a single institution and therefore have been criticized by some authors [ 102, 108]. Another single-institution study evaluating silver-alloy/hydrogel urinary catheters demonstrated a 57% risk reduction (p=0.002) in a two-year period compared with a similar period using uncoated catheters and found this reduction to be associated with significant cost savings [ 109]. Because it’s the least expensive to produce, ionic silver is the most popular product in this category. Health expert Dr. Josh Axe explains that colloidal silver works in three different ways to boost the body’s own ability to heal. First, colloidal silver can bring more infection-fighting oxygen molecules to break down viral and bacterial matter in the body. There are several silver-free antimicrobial topical wound treatments that have been shown to be effective. Some of these dressings are widely used in Europe, but not in the United States.
