About this deal

The Song That Goes like This from Spamalot. Brilliant witty song and great to subvert between a villainous would be lover and and a very unwilling Principal Girl as in my versions of Camelot the Panto and Aladdin. Many theatres in cities and towns throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland continue to present an annual professional pantomime. Pantomime is also popular with amateur dramatics societies throughout the UK and Ireland, and during the pantomime season (roughly speaking, late November to February) productions are staged in many village halls and similar venues across the country. Pantomimes in Australia at Christmas were once very popular, but the genre has declined greatly since the middle of the 20th century. Several later professional productions did not recover their costs. [66] Canada [ edit ] Google Travel". www.google.com . Retrieved 2022-07-11. See also "Erth Abu Dhabi". Theatre By Erth . Retrieved 2022-07-11. John Rich introduced the character of “Lun” (short for “lunatic”), based on the Harlequin figure in commedia dell’arte. He developed the format of a Greek or Roman inspired re-telling that featured a light-hearted harlequinade sequence and was also responsible for the first instances of incredible stage-magic and effects that are common in modern panto:

Extravagant costumes, improbable story lines, appearance from non-thespian celebrities and active audience participation constitute this outlandish but much-loved theatre phenomenon. Although it had its origin in continental Italy, the Victorians made it their own art form. Ridiculed by the haughty elitist and adored by the proletariat, the razzmatazz of Pantomime was here to stay.

'Please, please, no politics'

Cantell, Mary. "People’s Light & Theatre presents 10th Holiday Panto – Cinderella: A Musical Panto", Montgomery News, November 15, 2013 In 1843 the government allowed all theatres to use spoken dialogue and the harlequinade began to fall out of fashion. The focus instead turned to the fairy tale elements of pantomime and James Planche and Henry James Byron began to emphasise puns and wordplay in their scripts They’re usually loosley based on well known fairly tales or childrens stories such as Alladin, Cinderella and Puss In Boots. Overall roughly 160 people worked on Aladdin, whether it be providing the laughs, fixing wigs, selling ice cream, everyone contributed to this incredible success and we are beyond grateful. We will never be able to thank you enough, you are all, in our eyes, panto heroes. As are the amazing NHS workers who were boosting us all to keep us safe. Thank you.

The year 1843 saw one of the most important developments in the evolution of Pantomime: the actors were allowed to use spoken words! Up to that point the performers were miming to the music and needed a special dispensation from the Lord Chamberlain to speak. '100 Seconds to Midnight' @ The Alma ★ ★ ★★ ★ ‘What Wonder’ @ The Winston Theatre ★ ★ ★ Usual role is to help (traditionally silly) hero defeat (much more intelligent) villain. Often has a role in the resolution of the plot

Pantomime Scripts

Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Excellent opportunity for a comic character to lead the Company.

On the Road by Keane. Very rousing song (which goes down great at Keane concerts!) Again, excellent for setting off on a journey – like Aladdin and Abanazar, off to the cave. Panto scripts can easily be amended to include cheeky references to current affairs or pop culture. Whether it’s a joke about politics, celebrities or the inclusion of the year’s biggest pop song, panto always has its eye on the news and isn’t afraid to raise an eyebrow in that direction! Innuendo and Adult Humour Reach by S Club 7. Any song with the lyric “That’s when all your dreams will all come true” has got to be good for panto!Often a favourite pantomime tradition for adults in the audience, the ancient art of double entendre is an established element of the panto form. It walks a fine line: too blue and the adults will feel embarrassed, not blue enough and the children might understand it! Here’s one of my favourites from the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella:

Indeed such is their popularity many regional theatres are kept in business solely by pantomime – a sure fire money spinner, especially at Christmas. The Comedian: Usually, there will be another actor in a supporting role who plays the main comic relief. They are usually dense but good-natured and act as The Lancer to the hero or make up a comedic duo with the Dame. They're often a family member of one of the principals — the classic examples are Aladdin's panto-exclusive brother Wishy-washy or Cinderella's friend Buttons. Sometimes the role is merged with... Shake a Tail Feather from the Blues Brothers. Introduce with “…Let’s dance!” and it’s a brilliant celebratory song.I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred. Change to “We’re Too Sexy” and this is brilliant for the Ugly Sisters. Tweak the lyrics to suit any two-syllable town or village, e.g. sandwiching “Luton” or “Scunthorpe” between Milan and Japan!
