About this deal

Martell is one of the world’s oldest cognac producers. Founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, the company boasts an impressive line of cognacs known for their aromatics and richness. The Martell line is famous for being incredibly smooth and oaky because they’re aged in old oak casks for many years (at a minimum of two) before being bottled. A Brand with a Rich History In the VSOP – Single Cru round, another Master was scooped up by Cognac Frapin VSOP. Bates said: “Fantastic nose delivering warm, rich fruit and soft elegant spice. Elegant, refined and nice fruitiness.” Out of the four major Cognac houses, House of Martell is famous for exclusively distilling clear wines, without the lees, to better preserve the lighter aromas of the grapes and reveal an extreme finesse. Their eaux-de-vie are then aged only in casks made from fine-grained wood sourced from the Tronçais forest in central France, giving a lighter wood influence and preserving the most delicate fruit aromas. For this VSOP, the result is a wonderful symphony of plum, quince and grape complemented by exceptionally light tannins.

XO bottles of cognac are very dark and smooth. This applies to all cognac producers, not just Martell. Martell specifically uses fine-grain oak wood, which gives their cognac a delicate woody flavor. Revealed later this month, the new Martell VSOP signature and gift box ensure that each detail – and heritage identifier – is in line with the House’s vibrant and contemporary identity. The bottle, inspired by Martell’s heritage of craftsmanship, is a modern interpretation of a “ montre ” – the traditional sampling bottle used for cognac. The swift, featured on the Martell VSOP gift box in the form of a red abstract pattern, is leveraged in a bold and dramatic way. It also appears as an embossed motif in the bottle’s glass, designed to catch the light and create a scintillating glimmer that captures the daring, free spirit of Martell VSOP. Fine-grained oak ageing: the epitome of Martell’s excellence & savoir-faire Group two was chaired by Matt Chambers, spirits writer and co-founder of the Whisky For Everyone blog. He was accompanied by: Evan Prousaefs, bar manager at Sexy Fish; and Dr Winnie Bowman, Cape wine master, wine and spirits judge and writer. The Cognac has a rather unique, luminous appearance, tempting you to enjoy its deliciously spicy aromas that have been imparted from the red oak casks in which the Cognac was aged. The ‘Tronçais’ casks refer to the fact that the trees are planted closely together to slow their growth rate which results in fine grain. It is this proximity that allows the light tannins to infuse the eaux-de-vie with aroma.

The VS – Single Cru flight delivered a Gold medallist in the form of Courvoisier Cognac VS. Chambers found notes of “caramel and treacle” on the nose, followed by “pepper, raisins and woody spice” on the palate. Five Gold medals made for a successful flight – including a Gold award for fellow rapper 50 Cent’s “fruity, elegant and vibrant” Branson Cognac VSOP Grande Champagne. Brandy and cognac are truly a connoisseur's choice when it comes to distilled spirits. Their smooth, warming character makes them excellent for sipping after meals, while VSOP (very superior old pale) is best served as an apéritif. Or you can give a proper end to your dinner with a glass of calvados. Sweet and fruity, this apple brandy pairs well with rich desserts like chocolate cake and tiramisu.

Martell is among the oldest brands of Cognac in the world with 300 years of history. This brandy is made from white grapes exclusively grown in Cognac, specifically Charente and Charente-Maritime regions of France. The resulting wine from grapes is then distilled twice in copper stills to make eaux-de-vie. This is then aged in oak for a minimum of two years for the VS then blend to make specific flavors of Cognac. Martell production is unique, following a strict method of production and distillation called Charentais Alambic. Martell is amongst the most popular brandies in the world and is celebrated for the elegance in its taste. Martell is known for its elegance and tradition. Martell cognac was served at the gala dinner to celebrate the marriage of Prince Rainier of Monaco to the US actress Grace Kelly, and was even given as a gift to Queen Elizabeth II on her first visit to France! Brandy vs. Cognac: What’s the difference? Martell cognac is available in different types, mostly differing from each other with age, such as the VS, VSOP, and XO. The VS is made from the least aged eaux-de-vie while VSOP has four years of age in the least and the XO, at least ten years old. The flavors in each differ where the VS category offers more fresh and fruity flavors. You will find stewed fruits and jam aromas in VSOP category and flowery and spicy aromas in the XO category of Cognacs. The “red” of the barrel refers to the color of aged oak, which has housed other eaux-de-vie before it. This process will have taken place for at least 2 years and up to 8 years. This allows the spirit to reach the perfect stage of maturation. The Martell aging and distilling style is unlike no other, allowing for fantastic eaux-de-vie to be produced. a b Ball, Deborah (2002-11-11). "Seagram Acquisition Proves To Be a Good Mix for Pernod". Tasting Martell VSOP

VS, VSOP and XO refer to the age and quality of the cognac. Each corresponds to how long the brandy has been aged in oak barrels. In 1983, following a request by the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac)*, the French government drafted regulations governing the terms used to describe a cognacs’ quality. These designations, which may be included on the label, refer to the age of the youngest eau-de-vie used in making the cognac. In 1795 a marriage between the Hennessy and Martell families [6] cemented a strategic alliance that created an effective duopoly in the cognac market. Another marriage followed in 1865. [6] While still in competition, the two companies also made joint decisions, for example introducing the star grading system at the same time. [7] This semi-formal relationship was dissolved in 1947 after the death of Maurice Firino-Martell. [8] On the palate it continues to impress, with sensual yellow fruits coming to the fore, combining power and delicacy in just the right measures.
