About this deal

Evlyne: “Oh gosh! With me, I actually didn’t ever want to be an actor, it happened by accident. From a young age I was struggling with people and I never really spoke – I was pretty much mute to people I didn’t really know. PW Productions are delighted to announce the full cast for the 30 th Anniversary UK and Ireland Tour of Stephen Daldry’s seminal production of JB Priestley’s classic thriller AN INSPECTOR CALLS which comes to York on the 7 th until 11 th February 2023. I like storytelling and I like the creative and artistic aspect of it. With this production, it has enabled that part of acting, and it’s been a really good creative process.” Evlyne Oyedokun’s Sheila Birling and Simon Cotton’s Gerald Croft in the rehearsal room for An Inspector Calls. Picture: Mark Douet They have never heard of him but the Inspector’s ‘massiveness, solidity and purposefulness’ take over. He describes the way in which each of the Birlings and Gerald are involved in Eva Smith’s suicide.

Investigating the death of a young woman in poverty, he is the ultimate outsider, exposing something rotten in the state of the Birlings/England. Goole by name, ghoul by nature, the Marley to bilious Arthur Birling's Ebenezer Scrooge, he is also Priestley's still prescient prophet on stage (JB foreseeing the need for change in GB that will sweep Labour to power in 1945). The voice of moral conscience, the harbinger in the moonlight, demanding a turning of the tide.Priestley shows that Gerald, Sheila’s fiancé, also has some sense of justice. When he meets Eva Smith (as Daisy Renton) in the Palace Theatre bar, he rescues her from the hands of the lecherous Alderman Meggarty who ‘had wedged her into a corner’. The verb ‘wedged’ and the noun ‘corner’ illustrate her helplessness. Nonetheless, Gerald has a hand in Eva’s downfall too, because he ends his affair with her when it suits him. His deception is also unfair to Sheila. Daldry’s staging of An Inspector Calls has been entertaining audiences for over three decades, and I don’t foresee that ending any time soon. The Mousetrap recently celebrated its 70 th anniversary, and it’s not inconceivable that this production might one day achieve a similar level of longevity.

David Thewlis plays title role in BBC's An Inspector Calls". Prolific North. 30 January 2015. Archived from the original on 6 February 2015 . Retrieved 9 March 2015.My mum advised me to go and see a youth company at the weekends, so I did that, and I didn’t realise how natural it was to act as it is to live in the real world. I was a lot freer. Sybil Birling does not understand why her daughter Sheila is so impressed with the Inspector. She does not grasp the Inspector’s message ‘that we are all responsible for one another’ and most of the time she goes along with what her husband says. She is more concerned to keep things under wraps and make sure there is no gossip that could harm her family. She is not interested in people outside her own class. The timing of the play is also important. It is set in 1912, two years before the First World War, but it was first shown in London in 1946 after the Second World War, which the audience would have lived through. Some would have lived through both world wars, like Priestley. Early in Act I, Mr Birling does not know what is to come, and his judgement is not very good.
