About this deal

The vast majority of masonry construction will require reinforcement due to the height of the walls and the potential impact of factors such as wind over time. Which of these you require for your build should be specified by the architect or structural engineer. Below, we run through these two common methods of reinforcement and what they provide. With so many positives, it’s no surprise they remain the number one choice for external walls to this day.

Walls that are prone to tensile forces are needed to be reinforced, and both horizontal and vertical reinforcement is required. Galvanised steel mesh should not be used on external wall leaves. Here, stainless steel should be used. It plays an important role in the earthquake resistance as compared to the reinforced cement concrete. Standard configurations suit a wide range of structural load conditions and wall widths. Product selection is based on calculation. Position the mesh within the masonrybed joints, providing a minimum of 25 mm cover to external faces. In the case of beams, lintels and slabs, the concrete present in the lower portion below the neutral axis is not able to resist the load. This concrete acts as only the filler material. The use of Ancon reinforcement referenced AMR/S/D3.5/W60 is normally recommended at vertical centres no greater than 300mm, usually every course or every other course depending on the height of the masonry unit. The illustration below uses a 215mm unit height. Having the right reinforcement is crucial for any masonry construction. There are many options available, but the most common are ladders or mesh.

Position the mesh within the masonrybed joints, providing a minimum of 25mm cover to external faces. Bed joint reinforcement can also be used near the top of the structural walls abutting concrete roofs and to provide additional strength to parapet walls. Ladders can sometimes be preferred due to their shape, which allows additional masonry reinforcement - such as vertical bars - to be inserted. LABC Warranty also recommends ladders over mesh for openings greater than 1.5m in width, such as above and below large windows.
