About this deal

Even though we usually identify peated whiskies with Islay, not so long ago there was a bit of peat smoke in lots of whiskies, including Speyside. That is why it isn’t so strange to find a slightly smoky touch in Johnnie Walker, the best-selling blended scotch. When you let it breathe and open up the nose on this is one of the best, very oldskool. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. Above all, don’t be afraid to be “wrong” or to sound stupid. The best thing to do is to just consider what jumps out most at you when you smell or taste a spirit. Once you’ve allowed yourself to do that, and got past the mental “I don’t know how to do this” barrier, you’ll find that it all comes naturally. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.

You may find it helpful to take a peek at the flavour wheels here: http://malt-review.com/2015/09/10/whisky-flavour-wheels-and-colour-charts/ and I’d also massively recommend looking at the WSET systematic approach to tasting (designed for wine, mostly, but it feeds very well into spirits too). The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. Old Benromach 10 “Only ever matured in the finest oak casks, our signature TEN YEAR OLD single malt delivers delicate forest fruits and creamy malt, a touch of smoke and rich, lasting sherry notes.”– Benromach Benromach 10 Years Tasting NotesIf any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Peated to 12-14ppm, so a little less than Highland Park, then matured in 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry and married for the tenth year in sherry casks. The best thing is, I can still remember writing those tasting notes. There’s this snapshot edged into my retina. Me sitting at the dining table having this sort of emotional moment. Not because it was the best whisky I ever tasted. But simply because a trusty friend showed up and exceeded expectations. Maybe that’s why I haven’t taken the time to sit down and write tasting notes once again – afraid to be disappointed. Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv. Hints of eucalyptus and mint. Some crushed peppercorns. Plummy sweetness but also dried nuts and liquorice. Still this subtle dustiness – really nice.

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. You must slow down with this whisky and not come into the event with huge expectations, and then, it will surpass your expectations interestingly enough. Enter Benromach 10, which I grabbed in December, whilst in search of a New Year’s Eve bottle that wouldn’t bore me to sleep before midnight. Owned by the excellent independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is a small distillery in Forres which purports to make Speyside whisky ‘the old fashioned way’. It's true what they say about Benromach 10 100° that it's a gorgeous unique Speyside scotch, amongst the finest in any range age and price.

The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. Crafted from “the finest oak casks” of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, this release doesn’t seem to have the additional sherry finish that it previously had. The old ‘Romach 10 was a marriage of 80% ex-Bourbon and 20% ex-Sherry casks that spent 12 months finishing in ex-Oloroso casks. Benromach 10 is a fantastic starting point for those who want to try smoky whiskies. It has the style of a classic and traditional whisky, so it won’t disappoint those whisky lovers, but it also allows you to discover new nuances and details. This is one of those basics to have at home, perfect for a dram at any time. What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over.

Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. It is a quality product, perhaps the best 10 year old matured whisky I've ever tried. There is no sign of youth in it whatsoever, it is more like a 12 year old, possibly all the way up to a 14 year old matured scotch.

Maybe it got too costly, maybe the supply of ex-Oloroso casks has dwindled, maybe it’s a combination of the two factors. I’d say “who knows” but I’m sure Benromach’s distiller, blender and accountants know. All I know is that I’m ready to get to drinkin’ and see how this compares to the old 10. This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky. The Benromach 10 100° holds its own against many other older more expensive whiskies, this punches well above its weight. Finish drifts off into the night on a smoky ashy trail leaving the drinker wondering what exactly happened… on first sniff and sip that is. Once you know what to expect and settle in, this whisky shows a nice complexity and the ride becomes less jarring, more even and more enjoyable. The The Benromach 10 Years is a good sipping malt. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate.
