About this deal

So wheel off then. But even with the gentlest of pressure, holding the stubby nozzle right up to the chain, there's still enough overspray to coat both chainstays and rear mech in un-needed lubricant. Yes it will wipe off, but it leaves a detectable mark on even freshly cleaned and degreased metal.

The right chain lubricant is the one that has been recommended by the manufacturer. You can find the recommendation in your owner’s manual. With 55 lubes reviewed, including gear oil and chainsaw oil, we’ve also employed the services of a leading lubrication testing lab to ensure this is the most detailed and trust-worthy test you’ll ever see… Second, there would be jerky wheel movements. Since the wheel is not receiving the power from the chain properly, the speed continuously dwindles.

How to Lubricate Your Bike Chain

With no industry standard I can’t tell you if there’s a lower limit to this, but the comparison in no less valuable. New Relic uses this cookie to store a session identifier so that New Relic can monitor session counts for an application. Friction causes heat, but the lubed chain on Rutter’s S1000RR was temperature tested as it came into the pits after the TT and it was showing just 38°C; something reduced the potential for heat to be caused through friction.

We would recommend simply splitting chain lubricants into hot melt immersive waxes and drip lubricants. I.e lubricants that come out of a bottle as a liquid and go from there based on your requirements. Is it ok to use WD40 on my chain? There are many cyclists who primarily use WD-40 and have had no issues. In dry conditions it can arguably keep your chain cleaner longer than regular bike lubricants, because is less oily. Most modern bikes use a chain with O-rings (or X-rings) that seal in grease from the factory between the rivet and the bushing, which keeps it flexing smoothly and reduces internal wear. That’s there for the lifetime of the chain, which is why you don’t want to be too aggressive with your cleaning, or use products that could penetrate. Will WD-40 remove rust from the bike chain? There’s no debate on this topic. WD-40 is great at removing rust from your bike chain. Finding the right chain lube can feel a bit like trying to find the best road bike saddle for you; the lube that will perform the best for you will depend largely on where you ride, how much you ride, and how often you clean and or re-lube.

Blub Graph Premium Race Quality Bike Lube 120ml

Würth High Performance Dry looks really good, and did well across the board but it struggled in comparison to the others in the wear and weld tests. How much that matters will have to come down to your own judgement, but it did have better wear protection than the Muc-Off. This graph shows the overall performance of the lubes, and the ten that performed the best in these tests… Waxed-based drip lubes are popular because they work well in both wet and dry conditions and for on and off-road applications. Wax lubes are made up of friction modifiers and or products like tungsten disulfide which are often emulsified in a carrier fluid; the liquid helps the particles get where they need to be and dries, leaving just the wax inside. Due to the nature of wax, it dries and doesn’t attract much grit and can also support additives like Teflon, while coating and protecting metal components.

The testing of Scottoil showed it worked very well when you remember that it’s a constant loss system. This isn’t really designed to coat the outside of the chain plates, which while only cosmetic, can get a bit rusty if you haven’t got the delivery just so. Still though, they really do keep the rollers well lubed with little hassle. There are other chain oilers available too, like Tutoro, PDOiler and Loobman, but I don’t have any experience of these. Anecdotally, automatic oilers tend to be popular among their owners. Want a bicycle lube for all conditions? It’s time to try our WD-40 Bike® All Conditions Lube. No matter the weather (dry or wet conditions), it will provide all-round protection, displace water, and thanks to the strong adhesive properties of the formula, its long-lasting lubrication will protect your bike chain. The PTFE-based formula will also ensure that your bike will be fully protected from water ingression, rust, and corrosion. Complete in an aerosol format, the application is made easy, giving you a precise application. While drive chains aren’t kept in a bath of lubricant, a decent lube will – to some extent – help to reduce this damage, especially where it creeps under the unsealed roller. Using Tungsten Disulfide which, without getting too nerdy, is a very smooth and slippery component that's perfect for a chain lubricant. So slippery in fact the lube almost wants to slide off your chain links when applying. Remember to apply WD-40 Specialist Bike Chain Lube before riding to keep friction low and lengthen the life of your chain.

For lubrication, use the recommended lubricant. Do not use engine oil or any other lubricants for the chain drive. Using such non-recommended lubricants might prove harmful since they may contain substances that could damage the O-rings. Despite releasing All-Conditions, Wet and Indoor lubricants this year, the All Conditions lube is closest to the previous UFO drip in performance but is now white instead of grey. The CeramicSpeed bottle has a 'pea' inside to help mix the lubricant, the only lube to have this. Application is also easy with a very fine nozzle. Avoid getting lubricant on the brakes or tires. Avoid applying excess chain lubricant to prevent spray onto your clothes and the vehicle. Related Questions
