About this deal

Seeing big" takes practice. You cannot just memorize this model and suddenly be a master of seeing big. Structure is hard to see, and seeing the complex relationships between different levels of structure can be even harder. Unlike simple math, when you try to understand a culture, there is no point at which you will know beyond doubt that you "have it right." But despite this uncertainty, it is absolutely necessary. I have only managed to capture one photograph that I am happy with, the lion and zebra image below, for balance I have cropped the image to square with the horizon in the middle. The three subjects, the two zebras and lion accomplish not just the rule of odds, but the rule of balance and symmetry too. The dust gives a sense of action and movement and creates a mood within the image.

In the same way, we cannot simply describe culture as “beliefs and practices” because the long-term patterns of beliefs and practices become as real and formidable as the walls of a house. They form a structure that shapes our lives just as surely as wood and nails can form a structure that shapes a room. to correlate the methods of visual education with the findings of modern psychology and critical philosophy. My purpose in making this correlation is to demonstrate the essential reasonableness of a method, which turns out to be nothing more or less than the practical application to the problems of vision of certain theoretical principles, universally accepted as true. [1]In a passage originally published in the exhibition catalog An American Place— which also gave us O’Keeffe’s serenade to blue— and later cited in Georgia O’Keeffe: The Poetry of Things ( public library), she writes: Given the complexity of culture, it can be useful to have a model. Anthropologists have devised many models and metaphors for understanding culture. Many of them refer in some way to the idea that culture can be divided into three levels: infrastructure, social structure, and superstructure. Here we will use the "barrel model" developed by anthropologist Harald Prins to demonstrate what these levels refer to and how they are interrelated. No matter how good you get at seeing your own seeing, seeing big, and seeing small, you can never really see the world as they see it. You can’t “go native” and be just like them. Despite my best efforts, I could not really bring myself to believe that Kodenim had been killed by witchcraft, and that the death could have been avoided if my father had nurtured a healthier relationship with him. A basic assumption that anthropologists make about culture is that everything is connected. Culture is a complex system made up of many different but interrelated elements. He thanked my father and they extended hands for a handshake, tears in their eyes. The handshake soon collapsed into a hug which others joined in on, while others clapped and cried. Ask any photographer about rules of composition and the Rule of Thirds will slip off their tongue. For some photographers it is all they will ever use. The aftermath was difficult. Kodenim's family was hurt and angry, as we all were, and came to my father asking for compensation. The majority of the book is devoted to the specific techniques of the Bates method, all designed to bring about "relaxation". Huxley distinguishes "passive relaxation", a state of complete repose, from "dynamic relaxation", characterized as "that state of the body and mind which is associated with normal and natural functioning".

The Rule of Odds is not a well-known rule of composition and one that I struggle to accomplish in my wildlife photography. The theory behind the rule of odds is that the viewer’s eyes are drawn to photographs with odd numbers, and within the odd numbers the eye will be drawn to the subject in the center. It sounds easy enough, but in practice it’s not so, or at least for me. Through a series of guided drawing and mindfulness exercises you’ll explore a variety of ways of looking, seeing and expressing your experience through drawing. If a student goes through four years of school and comes out ‘seeing’ things in the way he did when he started … he learned nothing.” To the be-goggled everywhere, Dr Bates said that glasses were harmful. Eyes with an optical defect, he argued, could see perfectly without glasses. His tendentious book listed the negatives : when the eye looks through a lens there is a diminishment of colour, lenses must be kept free of smudges and debris, the field of vision is curbed by the edge of a lens, and, further to other bugbears, the wearing of glasses is simply impractical for movers such as athletes. If this sounds like advice that is very unlikely to cure your failing vision, I think you are right. The book was written in 1942, and my impression is that science has not come around to accept these practices as beneficial. In one brief section at the beginning of the book, Huxley describes the nature of the scientific debate as between those that believe the eye focuses using only the lenses, and others (such as Bates) that believe the muscles around the eye also squeeze the actual shape of the eye to affect vision as well. I don't know really anything about biology, but again, I think the modern understanding of how eyes work does not include Bates' idea. Second, at the level of social structure, we can say that it is socio-logical. It makes sense socially. Witchcraft beliefs encourage people to be kind to each other and take care of their relationships in the absence of formal rules and laws. Furthermore, if a relationship does sour, there are rituals such as the washings described earlier that heal relationships. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
