As one of The Ordinary’s best selling products, this retinol is a great option for beginners. It’s their lowest strength retinol delivered in a unique formulation with Squalane which helps to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce flakiness, irritation and dryness while using retinol. Which Is Better Granactive Retinoid or Retinol? Since The Ordinary has such a wide variety of retinoid products, they are often some of the most recommended. The fact that it spreads effortlessly makes me love the texture, it glides smoothly on the skin, but takes a while to absorb (but definitely absorbs). You can make a mixture of some drops of retinol serum (2-3 drops) with your moisturizer (1-2 pumps) in the palm of your hands before applying, this will enable faster absorption and less greasiness. Color. This The Ordinary retinol serum has the same light formula as The Ordinary Granactive Retinoids in squalane. Fortunately, squalane, the plant-derived version of squalene, comes to the rescue. It helps replenish the skin’s protective barrier and promotes skin health. Increases skin hydration

It is converted into retinoic acid, which is the active form of vitamin A, in the body. The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane is the strongest retinol serum that The Ordinary offers. If you aren’t seeing the results you want with The Ordinary 0.5% retinol concentration, this is the next step up.For more usage details and sample retinol routines, please see my newest post on The Ordinary retinol and retinoids: How To Use The Ordinary Retinol. Estee Lauder did a study on HPR and found that HPR (Granactive Retinoid) had higher gene transcription levels than retinol, retinaldehyde, and retinyl palmitate when tested at the same concentrations, but not as high as tretinoin. Apply this serum in the treatment step of your routine after cleansing and toning but before your moisturizer, creams, and/or oils. Treat hyperpigmentation – Retinoids help to fade pigmentation like sun spots and acne scars by speeding up skin cell turnover, revealing new, healthy skin cells

I only had redness (and no shedding or peeling) which I control by using The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide serum in the morning. Niacinamidehas been great in calming down my redness from retinol. Of course that’s part of its function to the skin. After easily moving from The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane to The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane, I didn’t think too much about how my skin would react to this 1% concentration. If you want to try a retinoid from The Ordinary, your first decision will be whether you want to go with the tried and true retinol or go with the new, potentially less irritating Granactive Retinoid technology. This retinoid is a nice step up from Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane if you’re looking for great results with minimal irritation. See this post for my experience with this retinoid serum. The effect is similar to exfoliation because it gets rid of dead cells at a faster rate. As a result, it can brighten dull and dry skin while creating an even tone where there’s discoloration. Best retinol productsTherefore, using a moisturizer that contains squalane is an excellent solution to dry skin. One of the biggest advantages of doing this is that squalane doesn’t have an oily feel. It is an elegant moisturizer that doesn’t clog the pores and is suitable for sensitive skin. Squalane is a natural, colorless, and lightweight oil that’s classified as an emollient, meaning it has strong moisturizing properties. But, first things first. Whenever you hear of squalane, it’s often necessary to make the distinction between squalane with an A and squalene with an E. To ensure that your product remains effective, it’s important to store retinol products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat exposure. This retinol serum also contains other skin moisturizing and soothing ingredients to minimize irritations, ingredients such as; Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato Fruit Extract) and Simmondsia Chinensis Extract (Jojoba Seed Oil). Research shows there’s a significant boost in skin hydration if a cream is used that closely mimics the skin’s own natural moisturizing systems. Combats visible signs of aging

The Ordinary recommends applying hyaluronic acid first, since it is water-based, and then follow with one of their retinoids. Can You Use The Ordinary Retinol With Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%? Retinoids can cause burning, stinging and peeling when first applied,” says Dr Mahto. “Build up their use slowly – a few times weekly – until you are able to use them nightly. If the product makes your skin sore, give it a break; if not, you are OK to continue using it.

As previously mentioned, retinol can be irritating to your skin, and newer retinoid technologies like Granactive Retinoid mimic the visible effects of retinol without causing unwanted skin irritation. The reason Retinol is less effective is because it has to go through two conversions for our skin to be able to use it. So when retinol is applied, it doesn’t do anything until those conversions happen. The conversion itself takes some time, which is why retinol is considered less effective than other forms like tretinoin. It also means its more gentle.

The serum comes in a squalane base that is very lightweight on the skin. It is hydrating and moisturizing, which is helpful even when using low irritation retinoids. The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane is the most potent of The Ordinary’s retinols and should only be used by those with experience using retinoids and looking for an extra boost of anti-aging benefits. As a collagen boosting machine, when applied on the skin, it stimulates collagen production, which plumps out skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol also encourages cellular turnover and encourages new cells growth which in turn treats acne, unclog the pores (allowing your pores to breath) and improves overall skin texture, with a youthful glow. Granactive retinoids are significantly more stable, which means they have a longer shelf life and you don’t have to worry as much about using an older retinol.
