If you’re worried about burning yourself, this model has an excellent safety mechanism. On the right there’s a standard mixer tap lever that dispenses cold mains water and hot water from the home’s boiler. On the left there’s an identical lever for the near-boiled water system. To activate it, you push down on the lever and pull it towards you, holding it in position to keep the flow going. The boiler unit sits in the cupboard rather than under as per the Franke, but given the history of the Franke, that's no bad thing, once the above was sorted linking up the remaining pipes is easy.

The associated hardware could include a small boiler/water tank and a filter too, so if you’re not great with DIY it might be best to get a professional to fit it. The filter, incidentally, can help prevent limescale, but will need replacing over time so keep an eye on replacement costs for that too. BUY QETTLE ORIGINAL Domestic Hot & Cold water is fine, the filtered water isn't really a need for us as our fridge does this already, but has proved useful for topping up the coffee machine. We love the name of this filter tap, but it’s also a compact and practical solution if you’re after a do-it-all model that won’t be too obtrusive in your kitchen. It serves up hot water at a not-quite-boiling 98ºC, but also functions as a competent hot and cold tap too. The tank under the sink does not make any noticeable noises (a friend of ours said her tap (not a Qetlle) sounded like a constantly boiling kettle). Longer tap tails, and an alternate over pressure drain that connects to a machine outlet - they are threaded - would be good.

Most work by having a thermally-insulated tank or boiler which stores the boiling water, so it is ready on-demand. When you press the handle or pull the lever, cool water rushes into the water, displacing the boiling water through the tap and into your mug or pan. This 4-in-1 is easy to install and comes with great instructions to follow. The temperature reaches 100˚C (boiling point) unlike other boiling taps on the market, and it is stored at 105˚C, ready for when you need it next. There is a ten minute recovery time so you don’t have to wait long for it to refill, and it provides up to 10 cups at any one time thanks to the 4L storage tank. And of course, unlike a kettle, a QETTLE is fixed in once place, can’t topple over and doesn’t need to be lifted.
