In actual fact, smart thermostats go far beyond simple programmable thermostats in terms of their ability to accurately control and optimise your home heating. Once you’ve set up your new smart thermostats in your home, they’ll take into account various factors to heat each of its rooms to the best temperature for you: The first mode, Away, is set to 12°C and is used when you go out. It’s a shame that geofencing isn’t built in to do this automatically, although you can create a similar feature using the excellent IFTTT channel. The second mode, Frost-guard, sets the temperature to 7°C and is there for when you leave your home but don’t want the pipes to freeze while you’re away.In addition, there are two special modes: Away and Frost-Guard. Both set a constant temperature until you switch them off. Away is set to 12C by default and should be used when you’re out, but want to stop your house from getting too cold. Netatmo ships the Smart Radiator Valves with plenty of adaptors in the box, so you should have no problem fitting them to your radiators. It took me a matter of minutes to fit my test valves.

Whichever option you go for, it makes configuring the thermostat a little more fiddly than with either the Honeywell Lyric T6 or Tado Smart Thermostat, both of which have geofencing built in. Scheduling becomes more complicated when Smart Radiator Valves are involved. Netatmo applies one schedule to every room, setting the profiles you choose at the times you choose. You can adjust a profile’s temperature for each room, say having the Comfort mode set to 19C for your living room and 18C for your bedroom. This isn’t as flexible as being able to set a dedicated schedule for each room, as you can do with both Evohome and Tado. As with other smart heating systems, manual scheduling lets you establish different settings for each day. Scheduling lets you set time periods and, for each, which heating profile to use. By default, there are three profiles: Comfort (19C); Night (17C); and Eco (16C) – although you can create your own or modify the temperatures used for each.

The second method is easy for a DIY enthusiast and needs no new wiring. If you have to go for the first option, you’re probably best getting a professional to install your unit, as it involves using 230V mains power. But with so many established smart thermostat systems already on the market - Nest, Hive, Tado, to name but three - does Netatmo's simpler battery-powered offering provide enough features to keep up?

However, to get the most out of a Nest you'll want to be part of Google's subscription model – which is an additional cost. Netatmo doesn't have additional ongoing costs, which suits me better, even if the Smart Thermostat outlay is a little pricier than Nest, Tado or Hive from the outset. Also it would be remiss of my to not point out that the Netatmo system is smart, in that it can learn using what's called the Auto-Adapt function. This, says Netatmo, "uses your home’s insulation and the outdoor temperature to programme when your heat should switch on". The theory there being it can assess outdoor temperature and pre-heat ahead of schedule time depending on environmental factors, so it'll adapt through the seasons. As such, it’s important to be able to control the heating levels in your home, so you can set the right temperature for each room as and when you need to use it. That’s key to achieving thermal comfort within your home, as well as making the most efficient use of the energy consumed by your boiler. Saving energy: in fact, controlling your heating remotely is a considerable advantage given that lowering the temperature by just one degree can already reduce your consumption. What’s more, with the rising price of gas and electricity, it’s important to be able to limit the use of our heating systems. The Netatmo Smart Thermostat allows you to set a custom heating schedule that suits your lifestyle and enables you to heat your home and hot water only when necessary and to the right temperature. This allows you to reduce your heating costs and avoid heating your home unnecessarily when you’re away. After one week of use the system will have a better understanding of your home and how it retains heat. Because the app has location data it can draw on local data for external temperature conditions, to get an understanding of insulation, heat retention, and heating time relative to that external temperature. Netatmo calls this PID, or Proportional-Integral-Derivative, which the app will alert you to being available - you can choose whether you want it activated or not.A remote-controlled heating system with a smart thermostat has many advantages and a wireless kit like this can be the best solution for many homes looking to lower the price of running their boilers. Remotely controlling your heating system can also be done directly through your radiators. Today, some radiators have embedded wireless technology so you can manage your heating even when you’re away from home. As such, the Netatmo system isn't as 'smart' as something like Google Nest, which not only learns your patterns but follows your movements if you let it (creepy, eh?) and offers more controls.
