About this deal

Adaptational Personality Change: In previous generations, she was bubbly and carefree; here, she's more studious and down-to-earth. Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Howleen was Clawdeen's younger sister in previous generations. Here, they're completely unrelated. Eventually, she was freed and reunited with her family, who were very surprised by her new outlook on life. But they soon discovered that she is still the kind, loving woman they remember. Naïve Newcomer: Downplayed, but having been raised in the human world, she has to have some monster things explained to her by the others.

Light-Haired Swimmer: She's blonde and heavily associated with water, getting to various places around the school by swimming. Older Than They Look: She looks like a teenager, but several comments indicate she's incredibly-long lived. In 13 Wishes, this is how shadow-sensitive Twyla starts realizing something isn't right: Howleen's 'friends' have no shadows. Nightmare Fetishist: Even before discovering she was a monster, Clawdeen had a love of all things creepy and spooky.

Other monsters

Her younger sister is Cleo de Nile. She acts very superior to Cleo, and will do anything to make her look bad. Because both Nefera and Cleo have superiority complexes they don't get along very well. Their father is Ramses de Nile, a successful antiques dealer. Advertised Extra: Occasionally happens with the movie-introduced characters, who are sometimes sidelined next to the established main characters and play a smaller role in the plot, and often make no appearances after their debut specials. Missing Mom: Many characters start off with a focus on only one parent, often the father, due to the famous monster angle of the series, but most get their other parent mentioned eventually. Early-Installment Weirdness: The line was initially presented as featuring the children of famous movie monsters. It did not take long for the concept to move away from that- Frankie being the only one that did keep to this idea. Clawdeen is merely A werewolf and there are many of them. Ghoulia is a generic zombie with no real famous lineage stated. Lagoona is the offspring of a sea creature and a sea nymph, and Draculaura's father is actually an ancient Roman soldier who merely happens to be named Dracula (which would, at the very least, justify her being 1600 years old). As we find out in the diaries, Roman Dracula is actually her adoptive father who may have served in the army of Julius Caesar, and the more well-known Dracula was, in fact, the historical tyrant Vlad Tepes. The two apparently had a major conflict, the former not being too happy that a murderous tyrant was using his name). Shouldn't We Be in School Right Now?: The ghouls regularly go on voyages away from school—sometimes explained by asking for permission or the school being in jeopardy—but for a series called Monster High, the titular place sometimes disappears for the majority of a movie.

Exact Words: When telling the werebeasts to grab the Klopman Diamond, Ms. Ziz claims it has untold power. When they bring it to her, she reveals that it doesn't have any powers at all — "the power's untold because there's nothing to tell". Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: A Lighter and Softer example: in the Scarnival doll set, Clawd runs a high striker game, and gets a hammer. Draculaura runs a balloon dart game, and thus gets darts. Fate of the Frankensteins: Victor Frankenstein was an orphan and just wanted to create a family. Frankenstein's monster and his bride created their daughter, Frankie Stein. She, in turn, created her younger sister, boyfriend and pet.

Clawdeen's older/younger brother. Selena Wolf gave birth to him while she was trapped in Beheme, and they ran a pest control business until Clawd was accidentally brought to Monster High. Dedyet is described as looking like an older version of Cleo in both the book and the diaries. In the book, she prefers to wear old, comfortable clothing such as shirts and jeans. In the diaries, however, she is described as "a monster of stunning beauty and royal bearing". Hexiciah Steam's SDCCI diary Relationships [ ] Family [ ] Ambiguously Jewish: Ms. Ziz and Mr. Klopman are both monsters that originated from Jewish mythology, but nothing is said about their religious leanings. Generic Graffiti: This is the theme to the Boo York Frightseers outfits, to represent the ubiquitous street art and graffiti seen around cities. Deuce's snakes have a tendency to offer him poor advice and suggestions, prompting him to occasionally resort to covering them with a hat to induce sleep. Despite this, Deuce still maintains a generally positive relationship with his snakes.

Adaptational Personality Change: In previous generations, she was fierce and sassy; here, she's more meek and nerdy, as well as a bit of a Naïve Newcomer to the monster world. Adaptation Species Change: Downplayed; in previous generations she was a human girl who was turned into vampire, but here she's all but stated to have been a vampire her entire life. Mythology Gag: The franchise is built on this trope; virtually everything is a reference to classic horror, and later lines play upon established traits of characters before. Some examples even cross generations, like G3 Frankie having a budget doll release with an outfit that looks highly similar to their G1 counterpart's signature clothing. Coach Thunderbird • Headmistress Bloodgood • Lenore • Heads Chef • Mrs. O'Shriek • Mr. Mothmanson • Ms. Ziz • Coach Klopman • Mortimer • NightmareMerchandise-Driven: A Mattel, Netflix, and App Store/Google Play store mainstay. They're not wrong. The brand caught on. Sigil Spam: Monster High's trademark skullette. It's this to the dolls' outfits, and in locations: even in places not tangentially related to the school it'll pop up.

Elemental Hair Composition: Compared to previous generations where it only flamed up when he used his powers, here his hair is fiery 24/7. Gretzky Has the Ball: In the webisode 'Dodgeskull', Ghoulia secures a series of outs after dropping the ball. This incident counts as this trope as the rules of dodgeball explicitly state that after a ball has touched the floor or a wall, hitting a person cannot be counted as an out. Anti Anti Christ: He's the son of the Monster High equivalent to the Devil, but clashes with him over how he treats the environment. Spell My Name With An S: Toralei (not Torelei; it comes from "tora" for "tiger"), Nefera (not Nefara; it comes from "nefer", not "nefarious"), Slo Mo (not Slow-Moe, as his name is Sloman Mortavich), and Penepole (not Penelope).

Monster High staff

Fun Size: The vinyl figure, Monster Minis Mega Bloks products, and limited-edition Frankie and Draculaura Hallmark Itty Bittys follow this trend: they're of Monster High characters in smaller form, with more Super-Deformed proportions. They're also very, very cute. Fish People: Lagoona Blue, Gillington Webber, Sirena Von Boo, Lorna McNessie, and Finnegan Wake. Great Scarrier Reef adds Peri and Pearl Serpentine and Kala Mer'ri. Frankenstein's Monster: They're a frankenmonster created by two mad scientists and directly based on the trope namer. Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Draculaura and Elissabat are kind teenagers who don’t seek to hurt people. Alpha Bitch: She's Monster High's resident "bad girl", and tries to run it the way she thinks it should be run.
