About this deal

His Sistine Chapel ceiling is one of the most celebrated feats in art history, but those interested in drawings focus on the more than 90 chalk-and-ink works Michelangelo (1475–1564) made in preparation for this and other commissions. Michelangelo was not only one of history’s most loved sculptors and painters, but he was also a master drawing artist. The Dream of Human Life (c. 1500) is one of Michelangelo’s surviving drawings that illustrate the delicacy with which Michelangelo handled the depiction of the human figure. Before commencing his best masterpieces, Michelangelo would create many sketches of the human body to perfect his style and composition. My Three-Part Qualifications to Teach You (Professional Experience, Education, and Experience Teaching):

Study of female head for The Cadence of Autumn (1905) by Evelyn de Morgan; Evelyn De Morgan, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons The Holy Family With St. John the Baptist by Charles Le Brun, ca. 1648–1650, red chalk with stylus outline, 12 1/4 x 10 1/2. Prat Collection, Paris, France. Le Brun was a student of Vouet and a friend of Poussin, and his compositions were built on basic, simple masses, as in classicism. And yet, his figures could bristle with the energy of Baroque art, as shown in the serpentine form in S tudy for Mucius Scaevola Before Porsenna.

Compared to, say, Rembrandt, there’s not a lot of range,” says Rubenstein. “But you always know if something is a Schiele. How does this happen? That’s worth thinking about.” Perspective drawing gives objects on a 2D surface a sense of three-dimensionality. There are two types of perspective: linear perspective and atmospheric perspective. Rembrandt van Rijn Woman Carrying a Child Down Stairs by Rembrandt, ca. 1636, pen and brown ink with brown wash, 7 3/8 x 5 3/16. Collection Morgan Library, New York, New York. “With simple gestures, movements and expressions, Rembrandt captured the dignity of everyday life—here, a tender moment between mother and child,” says Eitel-Porter, “though his portrayal is anything but ordinary.”

By the time you complete this drawing course, you will have produced a portfolio of amazing drawings, including professional landscape drawings, accurate portrait drawings, artistic still life drawings, and much, much more. Every student will take part in the form of collaboration where they will bring their drawing practice into dialogue/conversation/exchange with artists, designers and creative professionals from other fields. The collaborations are devised according to each student’s needs to challenge each individual and are expected to provoke potentially radically different departures for their work.

Some artists have drawn the parallel between this Italian master’s work and the fantastical, muscle-bound forms in comic books. But if any aspiring draftsman over the last 50 years has approached the rippling human anatomy in comics with admiration, he has come to Michelangelo’s work with awe. Lifetime access to all of the content, including over 19 hours of on-demand, helpful video demonstrations and instruction. Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) saw much suffering and depicted it with an empathy rarely rivaled. Her husband was a doctor for the poor in Berlin, which likely played a role in her socialist sympathies.

Rubenstein refers to his lines as “mellifluous, delicate and graceful. He doesn’t do anything that doesn’t have the most beautiful curves.” But his sketchbooks are what make Leonardo an innovator. Angelica Kauffmann, Aemilius Paullus and his family (1783) by Angelica Kauffmann; Angelica Kauffmann, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Among martyr saints the figures of Saint Sebastian and Saint Bartholomew are the most recurring and typical. Both offered Ribera the opportunity to experiment with one of his favourite motifs: a naked man tied to a tree. In fact, the majority of drawings traditionally described as Saint Sebastian or Saint Bartholomew are in fact anatomical studies of naked men devoid of any identifying attributes. Saint Peter, who was crucified upside-down, and Saint Jerome, whom Ribera depicts praying in the desert, were the subject of numerous drawings. Comparing Pollard Birches to Wild Vegetation shows the Dutch artist’s growth from representational to the almost completely abstract. The transition is on view to a lesser extent in the portrait The Zouave, in which the majority of the face is depicted with a kind of pointillism while specific features, such as the nose, are formed with classical lines. “It’s a very personal language he [came] up with,” comments Rubenstein. “But the marks themselves [are] mesmerizing.” The intention behind an artwork and the use of the medium is what makes that artwork either a technical drawing or a technically-executed artwork. And so I wanted to study the nature of accomplishment and, more broadly, what I like to call the mystery of mastery. It begins with my effort, after 30 years as an art critic, making vast pronunciamientos on other people’s drawings, to actually attempt to draw a single nude body myself. I found that learning one skill after another was cumulative and mutually reinforcing A studio artist for more than 26 years, Jonathan is also an experienced art educator who has held full-time faculty positions teaching intermediate- to advanced-level drawing, figure drawing, painting and illustration classes at colleges such as the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He believes in sound, proven methods, materials and approaches and offers both private and group instruction on everything from basic drawing skills to more advanced concepts.
