Not anymore,” Kaiser says, then sighs. “I finally have closure. I can now let it go. I’d advise you to do to the same. You kept that secret a long time. Fourteen years … I can’t imagine what that did to you. It’s a punishment all its own.” Walter Shaw, now with an empty place beside him, doesn’t move. Geo’s father isn’t known for being an emotionally expressive man, and the only evidence of his true feelings is the lone tear running down his face. He’s never heard this story before, either, and she won’t blame him if he follows Andrew out the door. But her father doesn’t leave. Thank god. The story is cut into sections, beginning with Georgina (known as Geo to friends) at her trial where she is sentenced to five years in prison for her role in disposing of the body of her best friend, queen-bee cheerleader Angela Wong. Fifteen years after her disappearance from a party, her dismembered remains are found in a shallow grave in the woods not far from her house in Sweetbay, the fictional idyllic Pacific northwest suburb that Hillier has used in earlier novels (fans of her work will catch cameos in the police procedural sections that come later). Despite being younger than dashing young killer Calvin, and obviously under his power, she is punished for never telling the police of that awful night. Not only did The Sweetbay Strangler have two more victims, she left the Wong family tortured with the hope that their daughter might be alive. And worse yet, she reinvented herself as a young, high-powered executive who becomes engaged to the scion of a chemical empire. Not bad for the high school queen bee’s doormat friend but unforgivable in a tightly knit suburb where she—a mixed-race transplant—should express gratitude that she was “welcomed” into the town and Angela Wong’s inner circle.

She suspected the majority of the executive team at Shipp hated that photo, that she was the one chosen to represent them, though nobody ever said so to her face. But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women. Lyrically the ballad revolves around an ex of Perri's, who sings personal lyrics. [6] In a blog by the artist, [6] Perri described that the song came from true experiences, stating "I wrote the song after I went home to Philadelphia for the holiday last December. I sat in my childhood bedroom and hid from the boy (with the jar of hearts) who wanted to see me. My heart wanted to see him, my head knew better. I couldn't take one more break so I wrote the song instead." [10] Geo didn’t protest, didn’t say a word, didn’t make a sound. She simply closed her laptop, her presentation disappearing from the large projection screen behind her. The detective took out his handcuffs. The sight of them made her wince.

About Jennifer

According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Hal Leonard Corporation, "Jar of Hearts" is a moderate piano-ballad song pacing in common time, written in the key of C minor (with the chorus in the relative major key of Eb). [11] Perri's vocals range from the notes E ♭ 3 to C 5 as she sings to the score of pianos and chords. The song consists simply of a piano melody and delicate strings. [6] Additionally described as a wrenching, string-drenched ballad, the song features "angsty, unvarnished piano ballad." [2] Perri stated that she does not know how to read or write music, but knew how to perform certain piano chords, which were used in the song. In the singer's personal blog she released the piano chords of the entire song. The verse of the song is played in the chords Cm Eb Bb Fm; the pre-chorus in Fm Ab Eb Bb Fm Ab Bbsus; the chorus in Eb Bb Cm Ab (Abm) end with: Eb; the bridge in the chords Cm (right hand) Walk down C, B, Bb, A (bass note) Ab G; and the outro finishes the song in the chords Ab B F. [10] Reception [ edit ] Critical reception [ edit ] We’ve had a romance with serial killers since Ted Bundy came along looking like he needed a hug instead of the electric chair. Personally, I’m against capital punishment for many reasons—most of which you don’t give a tinker’s damn about—but death is too easy. Living is hard. Even when you’re a supposed “psychopath,” which writers have latched onto with glee as the new serial killer boogeyman in our midst. But there are still entertaining tales to tell about the victims, as Laura Lippman showed masterfully in I’d Know You Anywhere. And now, Jennifer Hillier does the same—but very, very different—with her thriller Jar of Hearts.

It's not often that a mystery features such a fresh plot. Jennifer Hillier's thrilling, and quite terrifying, Jar of Hearts is definitely not something you've read before...The answers will surprise even the most hardened thriller readers." — Cleveland Plain Dealer Thank you so much to the publisher, Minotaur Books, for providing me with a copy to review. So are prison bed sheets. So are prison clothes. Prison isn’t designed for comfort. It’s designed to keep the criminal away from the outside world, or the outside world away from the criminal. Which aren’t the same thing, and the distinction is important.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison. When their eyes meet, a tingle goes through her. That goddamned tingle, even now, even after everything. From the first day they met to the last day she saw him, that tingle has never gone away. She’s never felt anything like it before, or since. Not even with Andrew. Especially not with Andrew. Her fiancé—assuming he could still be called that, since the wedding planned for next summer isn’t going to happen—never inspired that feeling. Jar of Hearts tells the story of three high school friends. Angela disappeared at sixteen, Geo knows the truth about what happened, and Kaiser (now a detective) works to find out the truth. But, will the secrets Geo shares with her first love, Calvin, come to the surface?

Jar of Hearts

Geo spent a good chunk of her childhood at Angela’s house, eating take-out pizza in their kitchen, sleeping over countless times when her father worked nights in the ER at the hospital. She embraced the Wongs during the days when their only child didn’t come home, offering them reassurances that their daughter would be found, giving them answers that made them feel better, but were far from truthful. The Wongs were invited to the St. Martin’s High School graduation, where they received a special award on behalf of Angela, who’d been captain of the cheerleading squad, a star volleyball player, and an honor student. And every year after high school, wherever she was in the world, Candace Wong Platten mailed Geo a Christmas card. A dozen cards, all signed the same way. Love, Angie’s mom. Everyone has a single defining moment in life, something that thrusts them irrevocably into a new direction, something that affects them at their core, something that changes them forever."❤️💔 Yes, she says, closing her eyes again. She knows how terrible it sounds, because she knows how terrible it was. But the tears won’t come. She doesn’t have any left. Georgina (Geo) Shaw was your average 16-year-old, high-school cheerleader. She was popular, smart and a good girl. Her best friend was the “it-girl” of St. Martins private school, Angela Wong. Angela shined brighter and bolder than Geo, than anyone at their high-school, and she knew it. Their relationship was fraught with jealousies and competition but they loved each other more than anything else in the world. However, this story does require a tremendous suspension of disbelief. A lot of outlandish things happen, and if you think about it carefully, they don't really hang completely together. The characters are all unlikable and varying degrees of crazy. And to progress the plot, there are some coincidences, a lot of conveniences, and even some contradictions. Also, I found this book to be much darker than a typical thriller, with some of the bad events verging on the grotesque.

Don’t forget to stay away from cinnamon heart candies! But never stay away this kind of remarkable stories if you are real die-hard fan of the creepy, spooky thrillers. Geo shakes her head. I never watched the news. I’d heard a little something about it from my father, since he still lives in Sweetbay, but I never made the connection. I suppose I wasn’t paying attention. It’s a torn piece of yellow notepad paper. On it, Calvin has scrawled a note in his small, neat handwriting. The story was set in the present time at the trial of Calvin James, a.k.a The Sweetbay Strangler, who was convicted of the murder of Angela Wong which transpired fourteen years ago. Georgina Shaw, Angela’s best friend, was charged with a five-year sentence in prison being Calvin James’ accomplice. She was sixteen at that time. Geo was at the trial narrating how she was there when Calvin murdered Angela, dismembered her body and buried the body parts in the woods close to her home. Geo’s testimony and conviction ended all the privileges she had in life as a big-time executive, earning a mid-six-figure salary, and concluded her engagement to Shipp Pharmaceutical’s CEO, Andrew Shipp. A five-year stint in prison may not be long enough, but it meant losing grip of any future life could give her. Geo’s other best friend, Kaiser Brody, who was the detective on the case, was disgruntled and furious at her for having lied all those years about Angela’s death. Fourteen years ago, the three of them: Angela, Geo, and Kai were the best of friends. They had a solid friendship which ended when Geo chose to keep quiet. Jennifer Hillier created a simple world physically; one that’s easy to submerse yourself in, especially if you’re familiar with the Pacific Northwest. While most of what’s she’s created is just that, a creation, it still felt as if it was absolutely a real world within Washington state. That said, the complexity of her characters and emotions is enthralling. I couldn’t help but fall in so deep into the throws of this story that I’m left feeling a little jarred. (Pardon the pun). I need more of what is going on inside of Hillier’s mind…more books to come I can only hope! Years later, when you saw the news reports, did you put it together that Calvin James was the Sweetbay Strangler? the ADA asks her.
