Dobbs’ preoccupation with politicians’ personal turmoil has made his creation so appealing to a general audience. It’s about people, not politics – an angle heightened by Urquhart and then Underwood’s shattering of the fourth wall to give asides to the audience throughout the action. Jonathan Best is nervous at the prospect of meeting Maggie Reinhardt again. She's his one true love since their teenage years, someone he looks forward to proposing as soon as she arrives from Minneapolis. I was completely immersed in this story. The romance is passionate and so poignant, and the complexity of Maggie’s situation with the inheritance of her father’s company was so carefully layered that I had to keep reading to see what happened. Dobbs’ theory is that brilliant politicians derive their ambition from private demons – and he himself doesn’t “have that sort of drive”. Another let down was the way women were treated. I liked the fact that one of the main characters was a strong woman that was willing to uncover a ground breaking mystery but other than that, I could see a lot of sexist vibes and that disturbed me.

For me this book had way too much drama I guess you could say. I love the romance and while the drama is cool in reading romances I want more romance and less drama. I would have loved to explore Maggie and Jonnies romance more and seen them date and have that one night but it was sorta summarized.
