Coach screws: these are driven into materials using a spanner through a square or hexagonal head. They provide robust and heavy-duty fixing. Set screws frequently have a head – most likely a hex fitting – but no threadless piece immediately below it (again, this differs from the length of unthreaded shank found on regular bolts). A recessed internal depression serves as the “head-end” because they typically do not have a projecting screw head in the traditional sense. Grub screws, also known as set screws, are a type of threaded fastener that is commonly used in mechanical applications. Grub screws are often used to secure one object within another, such as a shaft or a gear to a hub, or to prevent a sliding part from moving. Grub screws come in a wide variety of sizes and dimensions, and have a number of advantages and disadvantages that should be considered when choosing them for a particular application. Damage to the Shaft - Grub screws may damage the shaft if they are overtightened. This can cause the shaft to become warped or bent, which can affect the performance of the machinery or equipment. Cup point grub screws - These grub screws have a cup-shaped indentation on the end, which creates a sharp edge that digs into the surface of the object being secured. This provides a strong grip and helps prevent the screw from slipping or loosening over time. Cup point grub screws are commonly used in applications where a high level of torque is required, such as in machinery or equipment.
Because they’re often chosen to work in tight or confined spaces, or as part of more intricate assemblies, it’s common to find grub screws available in a wide range of very small sizes. These can start from as little as a couple of millimetres in standard hardware configurations, but anything under about 4mm would typically be considered a ‘small’ grub or set screw. Above this, they can come in just as wide a range of sizes as most other screw types.
Grub Screw and Set Screw Drive Types
Grub screws can often prove especially useful in situations where a standard nut and bolt would impede the optimal functioning of an object or component(s), or else would not achieve the clean aesthetic the installer is aiming for on the visible/external faces of an item. They’re almost always found being used in mechanical systems where two or more metal surfaces rub or press directly together, and where there isn’t room to fit a bolt or other type of protruding head between the two flush surfaces without limiting proper functionality or movement of the part(s). Easy to Install - Grub screws are easy to install and require only a threaded hole and a hex wrench. They do not require any additional hardware, such as nuts or washers, which can simplify the installation process. However, the basic steps to removing a grub screw will be largely similar to those required for removing any other type of threaded fastener:
