About this deal

To put this medium to the test, I decided to do a couple of test paintings, trying out and combining different techniques. This included wetting the crayon itself, or using dry crayons over washes, heating up the paper with a hair dryer to melt the crayons onto the paper, and creating my own pan palette by disolving shavings of crayon with water onto my palette as if I were using watercolours. I recommend trying these out if you are an artist who loves experimenting with new materials or looking to up your watercolor game. These are seriously my favorite new medium! For my beach landscape painting, I used my Moleskine Watercolor Sketchbook and a Water Brush (a lifesaver for travel sketching). I added silver grey to sharpen the edge of the farmhouse rooftop and malachite green to add ivy and branches into the group of trees.

The pastels achieved a good effect for the posts when I pressed hard then reduced the pressure as I drew downwards. How to paint a woodland scene using Neocolour II I hesitated to post these. But, you are here reading this for a review and examples, so it’s only fair that I show them. If I would have used less water, or a brush, things would have turned out differently. Neocolors are one of my go-to art materials for art journaling. They are versatile and the colors are luxurious and saturated. They have a buttery smooth texture. This review discusses watersoluble Caran D’ache Neocolor II wax pastels, not to be confused with Neocolor I, which are not water soluble. Woodland Walk, Neocolor II water-soluble wax oil pastel on Fisher 400, (25.5x30.5cm) How to paint a Welsh farm scene using Neocolour II Into the damp paper I added a mixed wash of ultramarine and light cadmium red for the tree line and shadows. I created a grey wash and continued it right into the foreground then left the paper overnight to dry completely.

Raw sienna was added to the nearer bush and midnight blue for the darker areas and the cast shadow. Swiss manufacturer Caran D’Ache describes them as “wax oil pastel” with soft, velvety texture which does not does not crumble, ultra-high pigment concentration, superior covering power, luminous colors, and excellent light resistance. Bare with me here- I wanted to give a nice example, with a video of some of the process. As things sometimes go, they went awry. They are REALLY water-soluble. This is a simple rendition of Van Gogh’s Starry Night . After I put down the color I used a small spray bottle. At first it was looking great and I was saying wow! Then I used too much water and was saying something else… Dry Wet-Really WetThe first thing I want to mention is paper. If you are going to be using a fair bit of water with the pastels I would suggest using mixed media paper. I like Canson Imagine and Daler Rowney Mixed Media paper. But you can also use a toned mixed media paper. I have used a heavyweight coloured paper but only used water very sparingly. Once the crayons have been water activated, they can be repetedly wet and reworked as many times as you like. This may be a turn off for some, but I think this is one of the strengths of the Neocolor IIs. The crayons are so opaque that layering is still very easy, even with them remaining water soluble after the first wash. You can work from dark to light or light to dark, both work really well.

Breaking off a short piece of burnt sienna, I dragged this across the top of the trees, the foreground bush and the facing wall of the barn on the left. I then developed the lit sides of the other building by working dry raw sienna over the walls. BTW, I have used hair spray but you have to get the cheap, old fashioned hair spray, not the new-fangled stuff with special ingredients. I’ve used Aqua Net with success. It also has an unpleasant odor but is much cheaper than art fixative. For children’s art, it’s perfect. Another strength of them being rewettable is erasing – if you make a mistake, most of the pigment can be lifted off by dabbing it with a damp cloth and the remaining errant pigment can be covered up with additional layers of crayon. Dragging the side of a dry pastel over a very wet surface creates a number of soft misty effects, great for portraying distant trees and hillsides. Edit 2021: It seems Caran d’Ache have discontinued the set of 120 as well as 42 colours in the range which is an absolute shame. The largest set available now is the set of 84. Test Paintings and Techniques “Coastal Sunset” 33.5 x 23cm painting, Caran d’Ache Neocolor IIs on Fabriano Artistico HP watercolour paper.I continued to paint the subject as a watercolour, adding ochre for the walls of the building and light grey for the roof. Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Water-Soluble Wax Oil Pastels are available individulay or in tins of assorted colours in sets of ten, 15, 30, 40 and 84. How to paint a snowy farm scene using Neoclour II

I scraped shavings of sky blue followed by moss green and olive brown into the nearer hillside then solubilised these shavings with a flat brush, which achieved a transition from a misty hilltop down into the group of trees below. I experimented with a different surface, Fisher 400, and worked with more ideas and techniques to paint Woodland Walk. The bigger set with more colors is already on my wishlist. When I get them eventually I will do another post with a detailed overview and painting I’ve made with them. I’m excited! Scribbling onto a scrap of watercolour paper, I then added a solution of Sahara yellow followed by ultramarine blue into the sky.
