He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy-colored. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right? He is so sweet and naive, and it was heartbreaking when he found out that all doughnuts are usually eaten. However, the story becomes much happier once you realize Arnie is not going to be eaten, and even more so when he finds the perfect role as Mr. Bing's dog.At first glance, Arnie looks like an average doughnut―round, cakey, with a hole in the middle, iced and sprinkled. He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy-colored. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right? Arnie just crawls deeper into my heart with each reread. Part of it is being impressed with how Keller worked out the conundrum to provide an ending that was perfectly satisfying in an unexpected way. Big brain thinking. It's a happy store at least in part because of how unhappy it could be.
