About this deal

Each card in your hand can only be used once per turn. First, play cards that you want to use for moving. Use the rest of your cards to buy up to 1 new card. On your turn you’ll merely reveal 3 land tiles and then select any face-up land tile to activate. There are 3 types of land tiles—resources, buildings, and royalty—and those types are further split into subcategories (making for 8 unique tiles total). Whatever face-up tile you select will activate all the tiles of that subgroup. If it’s a resource like wood that you’ve chosen, then you’ll collect all of the face-up wood from the board. If it’s a building like the castle you’ve selected, then cover all the face-up castles with your player tokens. If it’s the king or queen that you’ve selected, then remove all of that chosen royalty and then place your markers onto a number of empty spaces equal to the tiles you removed. Unlike No Mercy or the next Mandoo Games title (Treasures of Nakbe), Gang of Dice is a Knizia design with no history that I’m aware of. It’s also admittedly the Mandoo game I was most looking forward to trying precisely because it is the most unique of the bunch.

Once everybody passes, the display of new dominos is awarded out where the highest bidder gets the best tile, the second highest bidder gets the second best domino, and so on. But if you pass during a round and don’t have a worm among your played cards, then you immediately have to take the worst tile in the display and you don’t get to steal from another player (even if your played sum equals their displayed domino). Prognosis: a forecast of how the game will likely fare in my collection, and perhaps yours as well. If you have "leftover" power, you may use it to continue moving to the next space. The same 2 requirements apply, but you first subtract the power you already spent from the played card's power value. All the cards in the market are good, but your starting cards are quite weak. It can therefore be worth discarding those as the game progresses. This ensures that they don’t bury the good cards in your hand. There are also times where cards become superfluous to requirements. That is to say, you might have some water cards in your hand, but no spaces to use them on. In these instances you need to try and get rid. This refinement can be vital in winning or losing a close game. It is also why buying a single use card isn’t always a bad thing!

Setup

You know what’s surprising? According to Board Game Geek, there is only one game in existence that goes by the title “ Great Wall of China.” You know what’s less surprising? It’s designed by Reiner Knizia 😆. Play one card from your hand and place it above your expedition board. Most cards have a power value. The power value allows you to move 1 or more spaces of the same type adjacent to the position of your playing piece. Then, you may play another card to make an additional move. In The Quest for El Dorado, players will take on roles of expedition leaders searching for the land of gold located in the jungles of South America. Each player will need to assemble and equip their team with just one goal in mind, reach the golden boarder first. The player with the best tactics will be rewarded as winner of the game! Game Components With Family Inc., you only steal from other players’ queued stashes when you conclude your turn without busting. With No Mercy, you must decide to steal mid-turn, the moment you reveal a matching card, and sometimes it’s better to not steal from others if you wish to draw a second or third card without the chance of busting.

The Danger tiles include five types that can be implemented into your map in any assortment or combination: You cannot use a card for both of your playing pieces by splitting up its power. Additionally, all playing pieces still function as barriers - you can't move onto a space that is already occupied by another playing piece - even if it is yours. Each time there is a vacant spot on the market board, you have access to all remaining expedition cards. Through the centuries, this passion gave rise to the enduring tale of a city of gold. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Europeans believed that somewhere in the New World there was a place of immense wealth known as El Dorado. Their searches for this treasure wasted countless lives, drove at least one man to suicide, and put another man under the executioner's ax. The weakening of the first player and rewarding of the second player is an important incentive that often convinces folks to give up on the first dibs prize and wait for the remaining one. The row will be cleared out and refreshed, and both point tokens will finally be earned if the second player can maintain their new position at the top until their next turn.

Facts

Exception: If you play an item card without using its function (e.g. to pass a rubble space, or to spend it as % a coin), place it above the expedition board after you played it, then put it on your discard pile.

Cards you play to move onto a base camp space aren't discarded. Instead, they are completely removed from the game. They won't be used again this game. Players are competing to earn point tokens by contributing to various segments of wall. If you start your turn as the single largest contributor in a particular row, then you get to claim a point token in that row. But there’s a catch! That point token goes onto one of your cards in that row and weakens your contributions by the value of the points on the token, meaning it’s much harder to claim the second token if you’ve greedily snatched up a high one.It plays equally well at two as it does four. The Quest for El Dorado also works well for experienced gamers and those relatively new to the hobby too. If the rules were a bit more friendly this could easily be an entry level game, if it appeals a how to play video may make it accessible. I'm still awaiting a response from Ravensburger North America as to whether this new version will appear in English. Update, Dec. 9, 2022: I've received word from Ravensburger North America that this new version of The Quest for El Dorado will be released in North America in 2023. Each hex space shows the requirements you have to meet to move onto it. The more symbols depicted on the space, the more difficult it is to move there. The number of symbols equals the space's power.
