About this deal

On this weeks episode on The Fifth Trooper Podcast I walk you through each Faction style and what you should be looking at next: Star Wars Legion Factions The Empire Lando probably had more excitement leading up to his release than he actually got once he saw the table. His Contingency mechanic was hyped up, allowing one to ostensibly increase their hand size by another 3 cards. In reality this mechanic was a bit unwieldy to use, and didn’t actually increase the number of cards you could play. Lando himself also doesn’t quite perform on the table as well as one would help, in a faction where Cassian exists as a better mid to short range gunner. Han would finally get his upgrade a few months after this as well, which sort of secured him as the better scoundrel. Leia has always had solid support abilities and a decent enough command hand (especially No Time for Sorrows) and now she comes at a very affordable cost after the last points update. If you can afford it and have space in your command hand, Leia is well worth the upgrade over a generic officer. Generic Officer Mandos are a fan favorite but these never quite got there. After the Wookiee Warrior buff they couldn’t quite be as economical, they were more expensive and while they were more hardy on paper, at one wound a piece it meant that every hit that did connect was much more devastating to their damage output. One failed dice roll meant one dead Mando, but it required 3 successful hits to put down a Wookiee (even if those saves probably would fail). Nominally, Mandalorians were better at short range shooting than Wookiees, and their Jump did offer somewhat more maneuverability, but with Wookiees you might as well close the gap and engage in melee. March 2021 – Lando Calrissian Phase II – An upgraded corp unit that won’t panic as easy and makes most of their shots. What’s not like?

Unlike Droids, who are also generally delicate, you can’t afford to lose your units quite so easily, and you’ll feel every loss. It’s very much a “glass cannon” faction with strong but delicate units you must maneuver into ideal positions to take out the enemy and not get torn apart from retaliating fire. Strengths and WeaknessesToday we’re going to take a look at a couple of “new” meta Rebel lists that have been getting play in recent events. This lists are interesting for a couple of reasons: 1) they are themselves counter meta lists for other factions and 2) they are all aggressive skews. Let’s talk about those separately. Counter Meta

Rebel Troopers Upgrade Expansion–You do want this, purely on the basis of the DLT-20a. Its a fairly potent Range 4 gun that allows your troopers to take shots at the enemy from a relatively safe distance, and still do decent damage once you close the gap. The downside is the financial cost can add up, if you’re trying to get one for every one of your trooper units that means you’ll eventually be looking at up to 4 of them. If you want to hold off, the Z6s you got with the rebel troopers can do in a pinch, even though their role is very different. The excellent Rebel Trooper Captain also comes in this box; he gives a unit of Rebel Troopers some suppression mitigation and a training slot, which you’ll want to fill with Situational Awareness to deal with rampant critical hits in the game. Second Priority Rebel Commando Strike Team – Every party has a sniper that’s why we invited you. These are great clean up crew and cheap activation for a tactical play list.

Rebels are a good way to get into the game. They don’t have as many esoteric mechanics to understand like the Clone Wars factions do and their units do a fair amount of damage. The difficulty comes in their fragility, until you learn to get the maximum advantage out of cover and line of sight, they will die extremely easily so you always need to be cautious about where you leave your units. Commander Luke could still be solid in an Echo Base list, where you can still use Force Push to do some silly things with Hold at any Cost. Sabine Wren The models must be assembled and glued down to a base before painting. For assembly, the arms slot easily into the torsos, and glue is highly recommended to keep them in place. These are all units that may nail a certain theme or have a place in specific lists, but you need a very good reason to be running them in a competitive list. Jyn Erso

Star Wars Legion, or Legion for short, is a skirmish war game originally produced by Fantasy Flight games. As of 2021 production has moved to Atomic Mass Games who produces that other miniatures game owned by Disney. Like Crisis Protocol, the main draw to Legion is that the iconic characters you see in the movies are a powerful presence on the battlefield and all have very unique toolkits. Which heroes your bring can drastically change your list’s synergy and what units gel best with it. Luke Skywalker is very much a unit that wants to go in swinging into the opponent’s lines, while someone like Count Dooku wants his opponents to come to him and out duel them. The original Core Set is still a great place to start. It’s an economic way to get a few good starting units, all the cards, dice and tools you need to play the game and even a second army to split with a friend (or keep for yourself if you want to play both sides). If you’re splitting with a friend, it’s not even a bad idea to buy two and double your starting options. Leia– You already have commander Luke and are ready for a little wonder twins action! Leia is an amazing support piece that plays well in a number of playstyles for the Rebels. Stormtrooper(s) with DLT-19– So you have some in the core box but you are going to need more. I recommend playing the DLT-19 just due to the number of viable vehicles in the game. Within this expansion, you’ll find seven unique unpainted Rebel Veteran miniatures to add to your collection, including a Mark II Medium Blaster Trooper miniature that can be deployed as a detachment, offering valuable fire support to all of your units. Accompanying these miniatures are two unit cards, a selection of upgrade cards allowing you to outfit your veterans with new weapons and gear, and all the tokens you need to add them to your Rebel armies!

Bossk– Bossk is a versatile piece that has range, options and is tough as nails. Adding the lizard to your army is a huge upgrade. Commando Squad–You’ll want 2, even 3 of these guys. You’re only bringing them for the 2 man Sniper Strike teams, but their purpose may not be clear from the outset. In Legion, more activations generally is better, which sometimes means you need to engage in some list padding. Strike teams are your cheapest option, and pretty effective too. They don’t do a ton of damage, but with High Velocity, Pierce and Sharpshooter it’s generally a reliable 1-2 damage and suppression to try and disrupt a unit. More importantly, it lets you delay activating your key units, so they don’t need to walk out into the open and get shot up. Unless you have other special forces you want to use, almost any list can benefit from 2-3 Strike Teams. This upgrade kit also included Offensive Push for the training slot, which would become one of the most popular choices for the slot for a very long time.

Skew lists tend to be extremely good at a couple of things and lean into that identity as hard as possible. They may themselves have hard counters, but those counters are either inefficient or not commonly taken in tournament lists. D – Situational. Units that perform niche roles and are usable in certain circumstances, but you need a good reason to run them.Range Diversity –As one of the launch factions, Rebels have a lot more options open to them. Almost any playstyle you want to try Rebels have something to make it work. Gunline? Melee specialists? Heavy vehicles? It’s all here. With instincts honed in the trenches, Rebel veterans are often assigned the hardest and most vital jobs in the war against the Empire. Through the countless hopeless battles on desolate worlds that they have seen, Rebel veterans can always be relied upon to get the job done, to hold the line, or to fight to the bitter end.
