About this deal

None of that has anything to do with the quality of Citadel’s rattle cans: Retributor Armour spray dries beautifully. Even if I have to brush-prime the odd crevice and touch it up with a spot of paint, I’ve still saved a ton of time here. Look at their wee nameplates!

I primed the entire model with Retributor Armour spray . I then went in with some regular Retributor Armour and covered any areas the spray missed to make sure it had a nice, solid coat. I have tried many different acrylic golds and this range is the best range of metallic paints if you airbrush, they have the least graininess (I believe they are the finest ground pigment on the market for acrylic metallic paints) to the paint finish and they shoot supersmooth out of a airbrush: Make up a mix 1:1 Baharroth:White and thin it right down to a glaze. I used Vallejo mediums for this, but Lahmian Medium would work just fine. You want it pretty transparent. Softly highlight the middle of the blade in a band across it. If the blade is really long you might want to do one wide band like this and then one thinner one either side. Use strokes running along the angle away from the tip, this helps it look sharp Greedy Gold Colour Primer’s slightly different can shape seems to indicate a different producer than the other Colour Primers. The paint applies beautifully, no special treatment needed, just apply short bursts from a distance of about 20 cm, like with any other miniature spray paint your familiar with. The coverage is great, and two thin coats are enough to cover over bare plastic. Durability is also good, as this scratch test shows. With a fine tipped paintbrush do some slight recess shading by glazing in heavily thinned Scale75 inktensity violet in the recesses (1:10 dilution inktensity violet to thinner).

Tyler: The Howling Griffons have always been one of my favourite Space Marine Chapters. They have a distinctive and striking colour scheme, but it’s also one of the more challenging ones. Not only is it quartered, but it’s also red and yellow – two of the harder colours to paint. Start highlighting the majority of the armour in Citadel Mournfang Brown. This is where the process becomes a bit repetitive and this step is the most time consuming because you’re painting most of the model but being careful about leaving the previous stage showing at the bottom parts of the armour panel. I thought one can would cover 21 infantry models and 6 bikes. It actually covered 14 infantry models (1 Trajann, 1 Vexilus Praetor, 6 Allarus, 6 Custodians) and the bases for the 6 bikes. Heresy isn’t easy – you have to muster your forces, plan the route to Terra and make sure that your armour looks good. Fortunately, Horus Heresy mastermind and Alpha Legion commander Anuj is on hand to guide us through painting the nine Traitor Legions to a fast, Battle Ready standard with Contrast paint.

In step 2 above switch the Vallejo metal color gold and Vallejo metal color copper mixture to Scale 75 dwarven gold. When choosing Citadel Colour paints to use alongside Retributor Armour – Spray, it’s important to consider colour theory and complementary and split-complementary colour combinations. For a brown, bone, and gold colour combo, I would recommend the following: Parchment: VMA Sand (Ivory) washed with Agrax Earthshade, then highlighted again with VMA Sand (Ivory) again. Ribbons – Two layers of highlights, the first is Rakarth Flesh and a little white added, the second is just adding more white to the previous mix.I gave the eyes a coat of Aethermatic Blue . It’s okay to have this spill over a bit onto the helmet for a slight glow effect. The Allarus Terminators are fussier than the Custodian Guards, because their pauldrons are overhangs and their little turtle heads make a “dead zone” for paint unless you hit that area from just the right angle. The base colours are pretty standard, so if you’ve read through any of my Stormcast tutorials or watched any of the videos on our youtube channel (here), then you’ll have a fair idea. Highlight almost the entire jewel with Ahriman Blue (leave some of the previous layer showing at the edges).

I’m always looking for ways to use Contrast paints to speed up my painting, and after seeing an amazing Blood Angel painted in a metallic red by the legendary Darren Latham,* I knew I had to try something similar with the Howling Griffons.
