About this deal

Borba ili povijest, nije bilo bitno, Podkin je jednostavno volio – drijemati. Kakve koristi od svega toga kada obitavaš u sigurnosti svoga zečinjaka, pod okriljem svog moćnog oca i poglavice? Usred svog drijemanja Podkin nikako nije mogao znati da je i njegov zečinjak na meti Gvozdenih koji su na putu uništenja jedne davno i teškom mukom uspostavljene ravnoteže sile i moći. It didn’t take Uki long to realise that every child in the village hated him and that it was all because of his fur. Es ist Frühjahr geworden und der Barde muss weiter ziehen. Doch diesmal nicht allein, denn der kleine Kaninchenjunge Rauke wird ihn begleiten. Unterwegs, zu einem großen Bardenfest erzählt er dem Kleinen die Geschichte von Podkin und seinen beiden Geschwistern weiter. I’d love to think that children will be able to celebrate their own differences through Uki. His mother offers some excellent advice that I’d love to share with all the children that I teach;

I honestly don't think children's books have a right to make adults so emotional about their characters! And yet Kieran manages to do just that in this book. I have to say, I think I like the Uki story more than Podkin, but this may all be a result of knowing who the bard is and being totally invested in this character already. I also love the found family trope in this book, Uki and his new friends are just the cutest. I also would love to know where Kieran comes up with the language Kree uses, is it referenced to anything. Podkin, Paz and Pook must somehow travel through the wolf-filled forest and discover a way to convince their mean uncle to let them have the bow. If they fail, the whole rabbit world is at stake. Illustration by David Wyatt Uki & the Outcasts When a travelling bard arrives at Thornwood Warren on Midwinter night, he is warmly welcomed. In return for food and lodging, he settles down to tell the tale of Podkin One-Ear - and soon the rabbits are enthralled to hear the story of how one lost little rabbit overcame the cruellest enemy imaginable, and became the greatest warrior their land has ever known.

About Kieran Larwood

I really like that there are strong messages on bullying, being different and friendship that are told through the outcasts. All of the rabbits have suffered bullying in some form. Exiled for their differences, it is their differences that bind these three warriors together and as the adventure becomes more fraught with dangers so the their friendship grows in strength. celălalt plan al acțiunii - planul principal, de altfel - îi regăsim pe iepurași în Pădurea Inimii Întunecate, ascunși în vechea colonie Scorbura Întunecată (de unde provenea Crom, războinicul orb) unde au avut norocul să descopere unul din cele douăsprezece Daruri magice ale Zeiței: Focul Lunii. Uki, a young rabbit cast out from his tribe, must take on an impossible quest to capture a series of evil spirits before they unleash havoc across the Five Realms. Illustration by David Wyatt Uki & The Swamp Spirit The book sets up what I’m hoping to be another trilogy perfectly with lots of twists and turns along the way. The familiar cut aways to The Bard and Rue are just as exciting. I love how these parts of the story have just as much adventure as the main act. In my opinion this is Pook’s best book, I love how both stories begin to entwine and we receive the story from the past and the present. In the last chapter it begins to feel that there is more emphasis on Rue and his feelings, is this him beginning to mature – It would be great to hear him telling parts of the next story. The story is about Podkin, the son of a tribal chief, who, with his older sister and young brother, flees from his castle as the bad Goroms invade. The Goroms kill his father and imprison his people, like they do with every rabbit borrow they invade. There are no people in this story, only rabbits who behave very humanly. Podkin, who has two ears at the beginning of the story, changes from a lazy young rabbit who cannot even be disturbed to want to learn to read and write into a brave warrior who takes a stand for his family.

Uki is very different to Podkin, an outcast who earns your sympathy straight away as opposed to the spoilt rich chieftain’s son who you slowly grow to love. Uki and his mother are demonised in their village. Kieran cleverly uses the first chapters to point out the pettiness of discrimination.I found the book to be fairly fast-paced, atmospheric and poignant in scenes. I do especially like Podkin, and his character. Although, I feel like there wasn't much depth to his character and the reader would enjoy hearing more about him and his past. The theme is incredibly dark in parts, which made the story rather creepy. I loved this element though. I had a rabbit as a first pet, when I was about nine, and this book has made me see these creatures in a different light. It's definitely a book to stimulate the imagination. When the bard is suggesting some stories to the children, he mentions the tales of Beobunny and The Fisher Rabbit. What do you think they might have been about? Could you write your own version? Radioblogging.net is an amazing online radio show, full of ideas for writing and activities to do at home. They featured Podkin in a special episode, which you can listen to here.

And so begins another epic tale of these wonderful rabbits. There are more of them, but this time, instead of running away from danger, they are choosing to walk right into it. Podkin, Paz and Pook have survived - just - and are now holed up in Grimheart forest, avoiding the Gorm at all costs. Podkin, however, is feeling less than appreciated and goes for a wander in his new surroundings, where he stumbles upon a new Gift. This leads him to overhear a conversation about where another has been hidden, a Gift that can help them end the Gorm forever. After capturing Charice, there is only one spirit left for Uki to find: Mortix, the most dangerous of all. With his friends Jori, Cole and Kree, Uki heads to Eisenfell – the greatest city in Hulstland – only to find that Mortix has taken control of Emperor Ash and is plotting to conquer the whole Five Realms with her terrifying army. The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ won the Blue Peter Book Award 2017, the Prix Sorcieres 2019, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018 and nominated for the Carnegie Award 2018. It has also been optioned for television. Illustration by David Wyatt The Gift of Dark Hollow
