About this deal

Jane’s struggles with conception, anxiety and undiagnosed OCD are immaculately written and Jane is Trying covers the ‘not knowing’ and ‘trying to figure it out’ aspect of life really well. This is a funny and sweet story about trying to start afresh when your past haunts you, and the realities of being an independent adult. Returning to her home town from London means Jane is forced to adapt to her new circumstances and face her future head on.

Unable to conceive naturally and with IVF unlikely to succeed, Camden-dwelling thirty-somethings, Nikki Newman, (a call-centre operative) and Jason Ross, (an English-language teacher) decide to pursue adoption as the solution to filling the child-shaped void in their lives. With only 3 months left on their tenancy, Jason discovers the landlord has decided to sell the flat when a For Sale sign goes up outside. He formulates a plan to buy the place himself. At work, Nikki in her new role as management, is tasked with selecting one of the telesales team for dismissal. Whilst enjoying the storyline I didn’t really connect with Jane. To me she was just a bit too self absorbed and passive, relying on others rather than making assertive choices, though she did evolve towards the end. I loved some of the other characters who were well written and believable - especially Monica the hopelessly unprofessional therapist and Kelly a single mother who takes Jane under her wing. Definitely. I was only ever contracted for one series at a time but ended up staying for five. Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong are amazing writers. It’s brilliant to see them doing so well. Everyone’s so honest about mental health nowadays. In the 90s, we were too busy talking about Britpop Alongside the initial report of the series in July 2019, it was announced that Imelda Staunton would feature in the series. In the press release of January 2020, Apple announced that Rafe Spall and Esther Smith would star in the series. [9] Reception [ edit ] Critical response [ edit ]

Karen reveals her pregnancy to Nikki's surprise, but finds it difficult to break the news to husband Scott. At his birthday party, Tyler, feeling overwhelmed, hides under a table until Nikki reassures him. Karen takes the opportunity to break the news to Scott through the medium of mime. With the announcement of a 14 May 2021 second season release date, Apple also renewed the show for a third season. [12] Casting [ edit ] We’ll see how this one goes. Maybe in the sequel, Jane Is Really Trying, she could be reading the next Sharon Osbourne book. I’ve also been thinking about writing a young adult novel or a new standup show. I’ll get summer out of the way, go to Center Parcs and we’ll see. After I remortgage the house, so we can afford Center Parcs. Jane is supposed to be a successful copywriter on gardening leave, but it's never properly explained why Jane isn't using that money to find a new place. Her trauma in Room 3 was disappointing given how Jane avoided The Arch and made every attempt at ignoring Room 3 after she moved into the Arch. It came across as a weak attempt at trying to explain some of the reasons behind Jane's mental health concerns. Then the last-minute romance with Robbie felt rushed and kind of came out of nowhere, as though the author had run out of ways to keep the book going so she threw in another source of tension. There are some truly chaotic and humorous family scenes and an overall warmth running through the book, with a large cast of quirky characters and a dose of community action to boot. Hearing Freddy confess to an affair, blaming the stress of family life, makes Jason doubt whether he wants to go through with adoption and take on something that will affect every aspect of the rest of his life. Sensing his cold feet, Nikki is upset when she learns he only agreed to adoption in an effort to make her happy.

At an adoption support group picnic, Nikki develops an inferiority complex, alarmed by the fact there are many other couples also vying to adopt children, some more educated and financially better off than her and Jason. Jason makes her realise that the people they need to impress are not their peers or even the social workers, but the kids they hope to adopt. At a party with other couples trying to adopt, Nikki and Jason realise the other couple trying to adopt Princess and Tyler are none other than their hosts. Karen’s doubts that Scott may not be the man for her grow and she seeks solace with Deven, single dad and father of one of her pupils. Fingas, Roger (12 July 2019). To begin with some positives it is well written and it is an easy read, I read it in less than 2 days, It isn’t a bad read, I just expected the book to have a more empowering undertone and focus upon Jane overcoming OCD and rebuilding her life as that was the vibe I got from the blurb but she never really did rebuild her life, she just flitted from odd decision to odd decision. There is some intricate commentary at play around mental health and agency, and I liked how Jane’s growth directly explored this. I think Isy Suttie handles all this really well in her latest novel, Jane is Trying - a warm and funny observation of one woman’s attempt to start over. With a week to go until the interview with the adoption panel, Nikki and Jason invite their friends and family support network to a party, including both sets of would-be grandparents and newly-engaged sister Karen with fiancee Scott. A party which of course goes anything but to plan. I wish more time was spent on developing the characters so that they didn't feel like one-dimensional, aggravating stereotypes. I also wish that more time was spent on identifying the point of the story because, in its current form, there's a lot going on with a lot of waffling towards the middle. More generally, I wish we'd stop getting novels where the female protagonists are lost, helpless oftentimes privileged women who cannot figure their life out. After Karen's wedding ceremony, Penny arrives just as Jason is proposing to Nikki to inform them that Princess's and Tyler's placements have broken down. She asks them if they would take Princess on a temporary basis with no guarantee of adoption. On arriving home with Princess they discover Tyler stowed away in the boot of their car and vow to try and keep the siblings together.

Slowly. I did a course at City Lit, but then kids got in the way. We speak some Welsh at home – always say cegin instead of kitchen and bara instead of bread. I’d love my Welsh to be better. Perhaps that’s a project for the next pandemic. You know, in six months’ time. Hungover after a night out to celebrate best-friend Freddy's birthday, Nikki and Jason forget about a home visit by Penny from the adoption agency. With limited time and in an effort to make a good impression the couple pull out all the stops, tidying the house and refurnishing it by borrowing from Nikki's parents. Penny however is canny enough to see through most of the subterfuge. Some things didn’t really work for me and I felt very frustrated with Jane at times, she was extremely privileged but didn’t really seem to think so and took everything in her life for granted. But this was a really easy book that was very readable and it got a few laughs out of me. Dealing with anxiety and how it can come to be in a sensitive matter, this book really highlighted those fatalistic intrusive thoughts that are often out of our control but become all-consuming. Just as Nikki receives news that she has been successfully promoted at work, Jason is informed they were unsuccessful in their attempt to adopt Princess and Tyler.
