About this deal

By the end of the module, all students will have developed and honed their analytical skills in interpreting and evaluating poetry; they will also, as appropriate, enhance their creative writing skills and/or their knowledge of key critical debates about poetry in the 20th and into the 21st centuries. They will have an understanding of the politics and aesthetics at work in a number of major poet-critics, and a heightened understanding of their own creative or critical practice in consequence. The promotion of standard English in education gradually reduced the visibility and influence of such movements. In addition, the polarising effects of the politics of the use of English and Irish language traditions also limited academic and public interest until the studies of John Hewitt from the 1950s onwards. Further impetus was given by more generalised exploration of non-"Irish" and non-"English" cultural identities in the latter decades of the 20th century.

One of the most talented 20th-century Irish-language poets and folklore collectors in the Irish diaspora was Seán Ó Súilleabháin (Sean "Irish" O'Sullivan) (1882-1957). Ó Súilleabháin, whom literary scholar Ciara Ryan has dubbed "Butte's Irish Bard", was born into a family of Irish-speaking fishermen upon Inishfarnard, a now-uninhabited island off the Beara Peninsula of County Cork. In 1905, Ó Súilleabháin sailed aboard the ocean liner Lucania from Queenstown to Ellis Island and settled in the heavily Irish-American mining community of Butte, Montana. Following his arrival, Ó Súilleabháin never returned to Ireland. In Montana, however, he learned for the first time to read and write in his native language, married, and raised a family. Ó Súilleabháin remained a very influential figure in Butte's Irish-American literary, cultural, and Irish republican circles for the rest of his life. [15]

Heaney is perhaps the most well known of Irish poets and Ireland's first Nobel prize-winning poet since WB Yeats. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. For something offbeat, the Flat Lakes Festival in Monaghan is an anarchic mix of literature, music, performance and weirdness. It was set up by Pat McCabe, author of The Butcher Boy, and last year American playwright and actor Sam Shepard turned up last-minute with his guitar and gave a reading. In “Digging,” the poet aims to solve this seeming conflict by using his pen as his “digging” equipment, and to carry out a different sort of digging from that which his ancestors had executed.

This double-weighted module comprises independent research on a topic that develops from the taught modular coursework. The eighteenth century saw the flourishing of highly literate, technically adept poets in the Irish language. This period saw the triumph of popular accentual metres, as opposed to the elaborate syllabic metres which had prevailed until then. These accentual metres, however, still featured a complex system of internal rhymes, and it is likely that they had been in use for some centuries previously. The poets themselves seldom had patrons to support them and supported themselves with such occupations as farming or teaching. The puzzle is known for its clever clues and challenging difficulty level, and is updated daily with new and interesting themes. An appreciation of the multi-faceted ways and forms in which ‘love poetry’ may be both written and read.

His poem “The Last Rose of Summer” has been set to “Aisling an Óigfhear” (English: “The Young Man’s Dream”), a traditional tune transcribed in 1792. This is a Special Topic module offered by a visiting Fulbright Distinguished Scholar in Creative Writing. The contents of the module, which will change on an annual basis, depending on the area of creative writing expertise of the Visiting Scholar, will provide an opportunity for students to work on a specific aspect of creative writing. The specific module content will be announced as early as possible each academic year. Students who sign up for this module will, as normal, have the right to switch to another module if the content does not suit their academic plans. According to Louis De Paor, "Máire Mhac an tSaoi spent two years studying in post-war Paris (1945-47) before joining the Irish diplomatic service, and was working at the Irish embassy in Madrid, during Franco's regime, when she committed herself to writing poetry in Irish following her discovery of the works of Federico Garcia Lorca. The tension between religious beliefs, contemporary social mores, and the more transgressive elements of female desire is central to the best of her work from the 1940s and early 50s. Both her deference to traditional patterns of language and verse and her refusal of traditional morality might be read as a reaction to the social, moral, and cultural upheaval of a world at war." [23]A discussion and analysis of how poetic form in general is produced, this module introduces students to the form and language of poetry as well as the historical dimensions of, and contexts for, various poetic forms. It analyses poetic forms in detail, grounding students in specific poetic forms (e.g. the sonnet, the sestina, villanelle), reading a wide range of examples by different poets, with students engaging with a different set form each week. Learning Outcomes Renowned Dublin-based poet, translator and editor Ní Chuilleanáin, has published seven collections of poetry and and is a co-founding editor of the literary review Cyphers. Her poetry uses transformative, sweeping metaphor to invert the structures of interior, natural, and spiritual realms.
