About this deal

Calling the Old Man Out: Dewey does this to his uncle, or rather the past version of him, and tells him off for ignoring his sister and being selfish when all Della wanted was to spend Christmas with him. Sudden Anatomy: When Scrooge tells Dewey that Santa cannot be trusted, his eyes briefly gain visible irises. I Just Want to Have Friends: More specifically, "Friends who Won't Leave." This is Past's motive for holding Scrooge hostage in the Christmases of the past, so they can hang out forever rather than Scrooge learn the True Meaning of Christmas and never spend time with the ghosts again. Ten Lords A-Leaping- Reflects the Ten Commandments, brought down by Moses and passed down as Catholic law. (No need to reprint them here)

Young Donald’s original plan for Christmas was to spend it in his room, writing one great song. He even writes it on an electric guitar that gets de-tuned by Dewey. When Scrooge tires of his past self's party and asks to be taken home to his family, the Ghost of Christmas Past lets out a Big "NO!" before composing himself and offering an alternative. They don’t have a particularly Christmassy theme (apart from a couple) but they are very much within the strange tales genre. The stories fit into a wider series of books Moore has written, the Essex Witch Museum stories starring a character called Rosie Strange, who pops up in at least one of these. Death is one of the common themes. These are short stories which take place in the world of Moore's Essex Witches novels - supernatural thrillers focussed on Rosie Strange and her family museum in the village of Adder's Fork, Essex. The Strange family and its history entwine with that of the Museum which is itself a slightly uncanny place. If I'm supposed to be scared by misty skeletons in tricornes, I expect atmospheric writing to set me up for it, especially if the PoV character is slow-witted about grasping the situation. If I'm to follow a character dead for centuries who doesn't realize it, that shouldn't be the only interesting element. And so forth, "meh" for most of the collection. That includes a few unpleasant Roald Dahlesque- Ellery Queen Magazineish entries, especially " The House on Savage Lane" whose twist, unworthy of O. Henry, is obvious as soon as it becomes statable. And I could've done with the felinophile sentimentality of "Snowy" unsullied by its own ironic twist at the end.

Pokémon Speak: Subverted. It seems like the Wendigo can only say "Wendigo", but it's actually saying "When'd He Go?" because it's The Ghost of Christmas Past looking for Scrooge. Another of my favourites is Snowy about an elderly lady alone at Christmas except for her cats, she is happy but longs to be with her husband who has passed away. Thrill Seeker: It takes seconds for Scrooge to grow bored of the peace and quiet when he finally gets it, realizing that the frustrations of life that he was trying to get away from actually brings in the excitement. Scrooge goes berserk on the giant Santa figure put up in his mansion. It was most likely NOT part of his Jerkass facade. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit-----Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience [Forbearance], Goodness [Kindness], Mildness, Fidelity, Modesty, Continency [Chastity].

This Lifetime Christmas 2015 movie has everything, perhaps too much of everything: an attractive cast, love, romance, nostalgia, mystery, beautiful winter settings and a splendid, Victorian haunted house "Hollygrove Inn". It's the former home of the Forsythes,(not the same as in the "Forsythe Saga"), who have died without heirs. Ambitious, single and thoroughly modern attorney Kate (Jen Lilley)is sent from Boston to Vermont 12 days before Christmas to broker the sale of the inconveniently haunted mansion. She's promised a promotion if she can deal with the ghosts and the real estate before the year's end. Problems start to mount as soon as Kate gets there. The appraiser leaves in panic, his job undone, after having encountered a ghost. Plus, the innkeeper Warren (excellent actor Robert Walsh)is closing the Inn for the holidays. But spunky Kate tells him she will stay in spite of Warren's objections. Kate stays, meets the resident hunky ghost, impressive Daniel Forsythe (Thomas Beaudoin), who died by an unknown killer on Christmas Eve 95 years ago, as he approached "Hollygrove". The supernatural walks into our story right then in the unusual form of Daniel The Ghost, who likes to eat pancakes, imbibe drinks, and of course, likes women like Kate, in more than a spiritual way. At first, Kate and Daniel quarrel, but soon she succumbs to his manly ghost charms. Day 12 -Jan 5th -Hieromartyr Theopemptos, Bishop of Nicomediaand also Martyr Theonas (a pagan magician) Mouse Trap: Mrs. Beakley puts out some mouse traps with pieces of holly in them to catch Sugar Plum Fairies and Scrooge, of course, ends up stepping on one. The "True Love" one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but Jesus Christ, because truly Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Him because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life if necessary to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators.

Good Is Not Soft: While it's questionable if Scrooge intended for the Ghost of Christmas Past to suffer so much, and readily reconciles when given the opportunity, he makes no apology for leaving him alone in the past either given what the spirit tried to do to him. A Christmas Carole is, as the name suggests, Moore's version of a time hallowed classic, one without which no collection of Christmas ghost stories would be complete. It's familiar, but she also gives it a distinct twist and make sit her own. Disproportionate Retribution: Young Della refuses to cut Young Donald and Dewey out of the net even while the Wendigo is almost upon them, all because Donald called her "Dumbella". Downplayed in that the actual reason for this was that she wanted to hear an apology for her brother hiding himself away rather than being with his sister on Christmas. Tranquil Fury: When Scrooge comes across the giant figure of Santa Claus, he quietly and furiously asks everyone "Who put this up?" Ambiguously Jewish: Launchpad's ugly Christmas sweater has a menorah on it. However, it's never established whether he's Jewish or simply acquired a sweater for the wrong holiday (which wouldn't be a stretch for his character).

Caught in a Snare: While running away from the Wendigo, Dewey and Young Donald get caught in one of the snare traps Della had set for Santa.

The five golden rings rerepresented the first five books of the Old Testament, which describe man's fall into sin and the great love of God in sending a Savior. Drinking Contest: Dewey walks in on Scrooge having an eggnog-drinking contest with the Christmas spirits.

The book opens with Septimus and the Shaman which features elderly curator Septimus Strange telling younger Sam about his time in Iceland during the war when he was told to interrogate a local Medium upon a volcano who had predicted recent events before they occurred and his unusual encounter with the man and some predictions that he had made about his life. Be Careful What You Wish For: Downplayed Trope. Scrooge finally gets his break from his family and responsibilities thanks to Past, but immediately becomes bored by it and decides to go home. Actor Allusion: Being annoyed with Christmas Past's time travel jokes, Scrooge frowns and says "Ugh, time travellers". David Tennant's most famous role was a time traveller.I wasn’t sure going into this book how I would feel about it as I like strange, unusual stories, yet I don’t particularly enjoy far-fetched horror books and often short stories are a let down too as there is not being enough in them to grab hold of me. However, most were enjoyable in this collection, although I will say that for the title most are not very festive. This is a collection of strange, ghostly, chilling, odd and sometimes just slightly absurd stories. There are twelve of them, but there is no specifically Christmas theme. Syd Moore has turned her hand to a number of things, publishing, working for a Channel 4 arts programme, singer, go-go dancer, performance poet, children’s entertainer and working for an arts organisation. Moore is also the founder of an organisation called the Essex Girls Liberation Front, whose objective was to get the term “Essex Girl” removed from the Oxford English Dictionary. An objective that was achieved.
