This has a long spicy finish which leaves the mouth and throat heated. The spicy oak, and baking spices last and last in the mouth and throat in a marvelous combination. Okay onto the actual rum. The first thing I notice about the rum is that as soon as the cork is popped it exhibits that El Dorado smell. Inspite of the numerous other rums which use DDL rums as their base or entire blend, nothing smells quite like an El Dorado rum. Sweet, almost flowery but very difficult to place, with light whifts of brown sugar. There is almost no hint to the change, and even the new label does not guarantee that you will get the versions I bought for this review. (Thanks to Helmut from schlimmerdurst.net for the info). It seems that the recent standard range offering, given that this is not a one-batch experiment, has reduced the rums‘ sugar content in 2019 with the new label and then drastically again in 2020. I’ve also bought 3 bottles of their 15 year old. It’s not going to take a genius to work out how this review is heading……. An El Dorado Demerara White Rum aged for at least 3 years in oak casks, then double filtered through natural charcoal to remove the colour. This pretty much rounds off my El Dorado collection. The 3,5,12,15 and 21 have now been reviewed. Time will tell if any of the Single Cask, Spiced or Overproof offerings ever get a review. Time and Geography anyway as if I could actually get certain El Dorado rums I wouldn’t hesitate…..
