About this deal

Once the gingerbread has cooled, start spooning dollops of melted white chocolate onto the edges of the walls, roof, and sides, working bit-by-bit. Assemble one corner, put it in the fridge to set, then add another wall, and so on. The roof goes on last, and needs plenty of chocolate along the peak to bind it all together. To support our house, we used the little triangles as simple buttresses for the walls. Sara Chodosh Make it look pretty In the box you'll find a selection of Cadbury chocolate bars. We were surprised that none of the chocolate came pre-cut into shape, which means you'll need to cut several pieces out of the house yourself using the whole bars. Chimney- using white chocolate, glue rectangle candies together and allow to harden. Cut bottom at an angle to match the pitch of the roof. But if you want your house to be a real centrepiece, you'll want to give yourself some thinking time beforehand to work out what you'd like to do with the included decorations and which patterns you'd like to pipe with your icing.

Start by looking to an expert who knows more than you do about baking. Namely, the folks at Serious Eats. We tested their phenomenal recipe for so-called construction gingerbread, and found it makes a strong yet edible frame. Their serving size will produce enough dough to make one standard house, or you can easily double the ingredients for a more palatial structure. Gingerbread house building is an exciting activity, and it can be all too tempting to rip open the box and get to building straight away. Our verdict:Ideal if you're not keen on gingerbread, but it's messy to build and will likely end up covered in fingerprints. Our verdict:It certainly looks impressive on the box, but we struggled to create anything half as nice. Before you start mixing ingredients, make sure you’ll have enough dough. The Serious Eats recipe makes enough gingerbread for one 11-by-15-inch baking sheet, so get that out now, along with some paper. These changes make it easier for bakers to cut shapes out of the dough without worrying that the components will grow into big, fluffy versions of themselves when they bake. If you’re not crazy about the taste, just remind yourself that gingerbread houses aren’t really for eating: They’re for display—and for showing off your skills to your holiday guests. Draft the blueprint

In a decent-sized saucepan, melt the butter along with the sugars, golden syrup, treacle or molasses, cloves, cinnamon and ground ginger. In a cup dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in 2 tablespoons of warm water. Take the saucepan off the heat and beat in the eggs, milk and bicarb in its water. Stir in the flour and cocoa and beat with a wooden spoon to mix. Fold in the chocolate chips, pour into the lined tin and bake for about 45 minutes until risen and firm. It will be slightly damp underneath the set top and that's the way you want it. Roof- using white chocolate line roof peak with pink smarties, line edging of roof with rainbow Mike and Ike's. Use a paring knife or x-acto blade to cut out the shapes. Make sure to leave some of the excess dough around the edges, since this will help prevent the straight edges from spreading. Pop them in the oven at 350°F for 25 minutes.Add the tree and gingerbread men to the cake board by applying a small amount of melted chocolate to the bottom of each piece.
