sorrows which have no parallel and overshadow all calamities that took place in the history of Islam, for that matter, through out the whole universe. boldly gave currency to reign of terror and cruelty to oppress you and your friends and followers; detach myself from them and present myself to Allah and to you, Salih Bin Aqabah and Sayf ibn Umayrah have reported `Alqamah ibn Muhammad al-Hadrami as saying that he, once, asked Imam al-Baqir, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, to teach him a prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day (of Ashura) when he would visit Imam al-Husayn’s tomb and to teach him another prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day when he would be unable to visit the tomb and then he would point to the tomb and send greetings to Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) from his own house. The Imam said, “Listen, Alqamah! After you point to Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) with greetings and offer the two-unit prayer, you may say the Takbir statement (i.e. allahu-akbar) and then say... (the forthcoming form of Ziyarah). If you do so, you will have said the prayer that is said by the angels who visit Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him). You will be also raised one hundred million ranks to join the rank of those who were martyred with him (i.e. Imam al-Husayn) and you will be included with their group. You will, moreover, be awarded the reward of the visiting of all Prophets and Messengers as well as the reward of all the visitors of Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) since the day of his martyrdom.”

May Allah condemn and damn the people who tried to obscure and deny your office and status, wilfully neglected your rank and class Allah had made known in clear terms. In the book of al-Najm al-Thaqib (by al-Nuri), the story of the attendance of Hajj Sayyid Ahmad al-Rashti in the presence of the Imam of the Age, may our souls be accepted as ransoms from him, during his journey of the hajj pilgrimage, has been told in details. In one of the details of this story, which will be cited in this book after the Major Comprehensive Form of ziyarah (al-Ziyarah al-Jami`ah al-Kabirah), the Imam (`a) said to al-Rashti with confirmation, “Why do you not (frequently) recite the ziyarah of `Ashura', `Ashura', `Ashura', `Ashura'...?” The scholars of Islam consider it recommended to fast on the 9th of Muharram along with the 10th of Muharram (‘Ashura). This is due to the Hadith: O my Allah, therefore, double up the curse Thou brings upon them and also the punishment Thou decrees for them. The Pharaoh was extremely violent and corrupt in his rule, and spread blasphemy as he declared himself as God. The Prophet Musa (AS) refused to follow the Pharaoh and instead encouraged him to worship Allah. The Pharaoh would not accept that there was a power higher than himself, and in response sent a large army to destroy the Prophet and his followers.

The Source of Ziyarat ‘Ashura` and its Authenticity

The reporter asked, “May Allah accept me as ransom for you! What should one who lives in remote regions and cannot come to the tomb on that day do?” Upon you and upon all of those (who were killed) is the Salam of Allah from me for eternity, as long as the night and the day remain. O my Allah condemn and damn the first tyrant who unjustly and wrongfully usurped that which rightly belonged to Muhammad and the children of Muhammad, and bring curse upon those who, after him, followed in his footsteps. And may the curse of Allah be upon the nation that carried out, saw and were silent at your killing.

Muhammad ibn Isma`il ibn Buzaygh has reported on the authority of Salih ibn `Aqabah on the authority of his father on the authority of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (`a) who said, “Whoever visits al-Husayn ibn `Ali (`a) on the tenth of Muharram (i.e. the `ªshura' Day) and remains there weeping, will meet Almighty Allah on the day of meeting Him having the reward of two thousand times of going on hajj, two thousand times of going on `umrah, as well as the reward of one who has participated with the Holy Messenger of Allah and with the Holy Imams in two thousand campaigns.” therefore, I make a request to Allah to acquaint (me) with the awareness that perceives you and your friends, to set me free from the corrupting influence of your enemies, Imam al-Sadiq, Safwan added, then said to me: O Safwan, whenever you have an impenetrable problem that cannot be solved except by Almighty Allah, you must then visit (Imam al-Husayn) with this form of ziyarah, wherever you would be, and follow it with this supplication. You may then beseech your Lord to grant you your request and the response shall soon come from Almighty Allah Who never fails in His promise to His Messenger; out of His magnanimity and favoring. All praise be then to Allah. In two phrases from the Ziyara Ashura, it has been requested from God to grant the chance to take the revenge for Imam al-Husayn (s) martyrdom, under the leadership of the triumphant leader from the Ahl al-Bayt (a) or the leader who speaks the truth. These phrases hint at the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (a) and his mission to take the revenge of the Battle of Karbala. The principle of Mahdawiyya is the theoretical and practical foundation of the Shi'a movement during the time of occultation.I disassociate myself from them through Allah and through all of you and I seek nearness to Allah and then to you through love for you and your friends and disassociation with your enemies and from those who want to fight against you and disassociation from their adherents and followers. May the curse (La’n) be upon those people who laid down the foundations for the oppression and wrongs done upon you, the family of the Prophet [Ahlul Bayt]. So then I ask Allah who has honoured me with a cognizance of all of you and a cognizance of your friends that He also grant me the opportunity to disassociate myself from your enemies and that He place me with you – both in the transient world and also in the next life – and that he make me firm in your presence with a truthful stance both in the transient world and also the next life.

There are certain days in the year which are more virtuous than others, one such day is the 10th of Muharram which is known as the Day of Ashura. Ziyarat Ashura contains concepts like tabarra (dissociating from those who oppose God, oppose Muhammad or oppose his family), tawalla (loving the Ahl al-Bayt), self-sacrifice for society, and never surrendering to tyranny and oppression. This fact can be noticed in the words of this form of ziyarah, including the statements of invoking curses (on the enemies), the statements of invoking blessings (on the Imam and his companions), and the supplicatory statements. Hence, Archangel Gabriel conveyed these words to the Seal of the Prophets. May Allah condemn and damn the family of Ziyaad and the family of Marwaan; may Allah condemn and damn the group and the tribe of Umiyyah, one and all, altogether;may Allah condemn and damn ibna Marjaanah; O’ Allah! Curse Abu Sufyan and Mu’awiyah and Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyah – upon them may Your curse be forever and eternity. And this is the day when the family of Ziyad were happy and so were the family of Marwan at their killing of Husayn, may the Prayers of Allah be upon him. O’ Allah! Increase upon them Your curse and (Your) painful punishment.
